Pet Sitter Stole $20,000
A Silverhill woman has been arrested after allegedly stealing $20,000 in cash from an elderly woman in Daphne and replacing it with counterfeit “movie money.”
Authorities report that the suspect, who was hired as a pet sitter, took advantage of her access to the victim’s home to commit the theft. The crime was discovered when the elderly woman, whose identity has not been released, went to retrieve her savings and found stacks of bills marked as “For Motion Picture Use Only.”
Daphne police began investigating the incident after the victim contacted them in distress upon realizing her life savings had been swapped for worthless prop currency. Officers identified the suspect through surveillance footage and witness accounts, ultimately leading to her arrest.
“She was entrusted with caring for the victim’s pets, and instead, she violated that trust in the worst way,” said a police spokesperson. “Stealing from an elderly individual is particularly cruel, and we will ensure justice is served.”
Authorities recovered some evidence linked to the theft but are still working to determine whether the stolen cash can be retrieved. The suspect is currently being held in jail on charges of theft and financial exploitation of the elderly.
Police urge residents to remain cautious when allowing individuals into their homes, even those hired for professional services, and to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.
