Florida Atlantic Narrowly Misses Upset in 16-10 Loss to Michigan State

The Florida Atlantic Owls came agonizingly close to pulling off a significant upset against the Michigan State Spartans on Friday night at Spartan Stadium. In a game that showcased the resilience and potential of the FAU football program under head coach Tom Herman, the Owls fell just short, losing 16-10 in a nail-biting finish.

The first half of the game was dominated by Michigan State, who took a 16-3 lead into the locker room. FAU’s defense struggled to contain the Spartans early on, allowing them to score consistently, but they managed to prevent the game from getting out of hand.

However, the second half was a different story. The Owls’ defense tightened up, refusing to allow another point for the rest of the game. This defensive resilience kept FAU within striking distance, and the offense responded by putting together a crucial scoring drive in the fourth quarter. The drive culminated in a touchdown pass from quarterback Cam Fancher to wide receiver Jayshon Platt, trimming the Spartans’ lead to 16-10.

Controversial call seals FAU’s fate. With just 3:27 left in the game, the Owls had an opportunity to march into Michigan State territory and potentially take the lead. Facing a critical 4th-and-1, FAU opted for a quarterback keeper, with Cam Fancher trying to push through for the first down. A Michigan State defender appeared to target Fancher on the play, leading the officials to throw flags for potential penalties.

However, after a lengthy video review, the targeting call was overturned, and the Spartans were awarded possession after it was determined that FAU had failed to gain the first down. The only penalty that remained was an unsportsmanlike conduct call against Michigan State, which did not affect the possession change. This controversial decision sparked frustration among FAU players, coaches, and fans, as it was a pivotal moment that could have altered the outcome of the game.

Following the game, Coach Tom Herman expressed his disappointment with the outcome, particularly the overturned targeting call, but also praised his team’s effort and determination.

“It’s tough to lose a game like that, especially when we felt we had the momentum in the second half,” Herman said during the postgame press conference. “Our guys fought hard, and we were in a position to win against a very good team. We’re disappointed, but we also learned a lot about ourselves tonight.”

Despite the loss, there were several positives for the Owls to take away from the game. The defense showed marked improvement, particularly in the second half, and the offense demonstrated its potential with the late-game touchdown drive. FAU’s ability to hang tough against a Power Five opponent like Michigan State is an encouraging sign as they prepare for their home opener.

As the Owls turn their attention to their next game against Army on September 7th, they’ll be looking to build on the lessons learned in East Lansing. While the loss stings, FAU’s performance against Michigan State has provided a glimpse of the team’s potential this season as they aim to rebound from last year’s disappointing 4-8 finish.

FAU fans can take heart in the fact that their team is poised to take a significant step forward, and with conference play just around the corner, the Owls will be eager to show they belong among the top teams in the American Athletic Conference.
