Florida Opens Jon Sumrall Era With 66-21 Rout of Florida Atlantic

Florida Dominates FAU in Sumrall’s Debut

First-year Florida coach Jon Sumrall stepped into The Swamp minutes before the opening kickoff and was admittedly surprised by the atmosphere. It was even more intense than what he experienced as a Kentucky linebacker more than two decades ago. The experience became even more memorable as Sumrall and the Gators opened the 2026 season with a dominant 66-21 victory over Florida Atlantic on Saturday night.

The victory gave Florida its seventh consecutive home debut win for a new head coach and marked the Gators’ highest-scoring season opener since 1994. Sumrall entered the sold-out Swamp amid fire, smoke and strobe lights, delivered a fiery pregame speech on the field and then watched his team put together an offensive performance that was never seriously threatened.

Baugh Takes Over the Game

Running back Jadan Baugh was the centerpiece of Florida’s offensive attack, rushing for 160 yards and three touchdowns while repeatedly making FAU defenders miss. The 225-pound junior continued the momentum from his strong finish to last season, when he rushed for 266 yards and two touchdowns against Florida State.

Baugh scored on runs of 12, 7 and 6 yards against the Owls and added the longest run of his career with a 61-yard burst in the third quarter. He now has 426 rushing yards and five touchdowns over his last two games, both impressive victories against in-state opponents.

Philo Leads Explosive Florida Offense

Quarterback Aaron Philo also turned in an impressive performance in his Florida debut, throwing for 275 yards and accounting for four total touchdowns. The Gators scored on their first six possessions, quickly turning the season opener into a one-sided affair.

Philo connected with Vernell Brown III for a 49-yard touchdown before finding former Georgia Tech teammate and current roommate Bailey Stockton for a 12-yard score. He later scrambled for a touchdown on fourth down to give Florida a 24-7 lead before Baugh took over.

Florida’s willingness to continue throwing and scoring late into the game, including a touchdown in the final minute, brought comparisons to the aggressive offensive approach associated with Florida Hall of Famer Steve Spurrier.

FAU Moves Forward After Tough Loss

Florida Atlantic showed some offensive efficiency despite the lopsided final score. The Owls ran 57 plays in the first half and converted 10 of their first 16 third-down opportunities, but they could not find an answer for Florida’s explosive rushing attack.

Defenders Bo Simpson-Nealy, Jonathan Bax, Damon Allen and JK Johnson had particularly difficult nights trying to contain Baugh, who repeatedly turned routine plays into big gains. The loss gives FAU plenty to address heading into its next game, while Florida can begin building on an impressive first impression under Sumrall.

What’s Next for Florida and FAU

Florida Atlantic will return home next Saturday to host Navy as it looks to bounce back from the loss. Florida will also return to The Swamp next Saturday when the Gators host Campbell. After an emphatic opening-night victory, Sumrall and Florida will look to carry the momentum into the remainder of the 2026 season.
