Florida State Baseball Keeps College World Series Hopes Alive Beat Virginia 7-3

No. 1 Tennessee Stuns No. 8 Florida State with Late-Inning Rally to Win 12-11 in College World Series Opener

In a thrilling opening round of the College World Series, No. 1 Tennessee Volunteers pulled off a dramatic 12-11 victory over the No. 8 Florida State Seminoles. The game, characterized by its seesaw nature and explosive offenses, concluded with Tennessee scoring four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, sealing a memorable comeback at TD Ameritrade Park.

The contest began with a flurry of activity, with both teams exchanging blows in the early innings. Florida State surged ahead in the third inning, putting up six runs. Jaime Ferrer was the catalyst, smashing a two-run double to kick off the scoring spree. He continued his heroics in the fourth inning, blasting a two-run home run—the first of this year’s College World Series and his 20th of the season—extending the Seminoles’ lead to 9-4.

Despite falling behind, Tennessee refused to back down. The Volunteers began chipping away at the deficit with a two-run homer in the fifth inning, followed by a solo shot in the sixth. However, Florida State’s Marco Dinges seemed to put the game out of reach with a two-run double in the seventh inning, giving the Seminoles an 11-7 advantage.

The Volunteers, known for their resilience, entered the ninth inning trailing by three runs. After adding a run in the eighth, Tennessee orchestrated a remarkable rally in their final at-bat. A combination of clutch hitting and Florida State’s defensive miscues allowed the Volunteers to score four runs, culminating in a walk-off victory that sent the predominantly orange-clad crowd into a frenzy.

The game featured a combined 31 hits and five errors, underscoring both teams’ offensive prowess and defensive lapses. Florida State’s lineup was impressive, with all nine starters reaching base, eight scoring runs, and eight recording hits. Marco Dinges led the way with three hits, while leadoff hitter Max Williams, Jaime Ferrer, and shortstop Alex Lodise each contributed a pair of hits.

Tennessee’s lineup also delivered, showcasing their depth and ability to score in bunches, especially under pressure. Both teams faced challenges on the mound. Florida State starter Jamie Arnold allowed four earned runs over five innings, struggling to contain Tennessee’s potent offense. Tennessee’s pitchers also faced a tough task against a relentless Seminole lineup, but their bullpen ultimately held firm when it mattered most.

The victory propels Tennessee (56-12) into the winners bracket, where they will face North Carolina in their next matchup. Meanwhile, Florida State (47-16) will have to quickly regroup as they prepare to take on No. 12 Virginia in an elimination game on Sunday. The stakes are high, and both teams will need to dig deep as they continue their quest for a national championship.

The opening round’s outcome serves as a testament to the unpredictability and excitement of the College World Series, setting the stage for what promises to be an unforgettable tournament.

Florida State Stays Alive in College World Series with 7-3 Victory Over Virginia

In a high-stakes elimination game at Charles Schwab Field Omaha, No. 8 Florida State kept their College World Series hopes alive with a decisive 7-3 win over No. 12 Virginia. Powered by Jaime Ferrer’s offensive fireworks and Carson Dorsey’s solid pitching, the Seminoles (48-16) advanced to face the loser of the Tennessee-North Carolina matchup on Tuesday.

Jaime Ferrer etched his name into College World Series history with another spectacular performance, becoming the first player since 1998 to notch multiple four-RBI games in a single CWS. Ferrer followed his standout performance against No. 1 Tennessee, where he hit a two-run home run and a two-run double, with two more homers against Virginia. He launched a solo shot in the fourth inning and a three-run blast in the fifth, propelling Florida State to a commanding lead.

Ferrer’s two home runs on Sunday made him the seventh Seminole and the first since 2000 to hit three home runs in a single College World Series. His offensive prowess has been a driving force for the Seminoles, exemplifying his crucial role in their postseason run.

Carson Dorsey continued his postseason dominance, pitching seven strong innings against Virginia. Dorsey allowed three runs and struck out seven, maintaining his impressive form in the NCAA Tournament. Over 21 innings in the tournament, Dorsey boasts a 2.14 ERA with 20 strikeouts, proving to be a reliable ace for the Seminoles. Florida State has a stellar 9-2 record in his 11 starts this season, including a perfect 3-0 in the postseason.

The Seminoles struck first in the third inning when James Tibbs drew a bases-loaded walk off Virginia pitcher Jay Woolfolk, bringing in the first run of the game. Ferrer then doubled the lead with a solo home run on the first pitch of the fourth inning.

In the fifth inning, after Virginia’s bullpen retired the first two Florida State batters, Cam Smith doubled, Tibbs was intentionally walked, and Marco Dinges hit an RBI single, setting the stage for Ferrer’s second home run—a three-run shot that extended FSU’s lead from 3-0 to 6-0.

Alex Lodise added a solo home run to begin the sixth inning, marking his eighth homer of the year and further cushioning Florida State’s lead. Virginia responded with a pair of runs in the seventh inning and another in the eighth, but Seminoles’ reliever Brennen Oxford shut the door, allowing just one hit over the final two innings to secure the victory.

With the win, Florida State moves on to face the loser of the Tennessee and North Carolina contest in another elimination game on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. ET. The Seminoles will look to continue their momentum and Ferrer’s hot streak as they aim to advance further in the tournament.
