The Miami Heat delivered a dramatic comeback victory Wednesday night, overcoming a 20-point deficit before Klay Thompson knocked down a game winning 3-pointer with one second remaining in overtime to lift Miami to a thrilling 117-116 win over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Giannis Antetokounmpo added 27 points, 14 rebounds and six assists as Miami continued its recent turnaround, winning three of its last four games after opening the season with four consecutive losses. The Clippers, meanwhile, suffered their seventh straight defeat after winning their season opener against Sacramento on Oct. 21.

Heat Overcome 20 Point Deficit to Force Overtime

Miami faced a significant uphill battle after Los Angeles dominated the second quarter and built a commanding lead. The Heat trailed by nine points after the opening period before the Clippers opened the second quarter with 10 consecutive points, sparking a 26-2 run that completely shifted the momentum.

Los Angeles extended its advantage to 50-35 on a 3-pointer by rookie guard Keaton Wagler before Darius Garland pushed the lead to 20 points with another 3-pointer, making it 63-43 with 3:12 remaining in the first half. The Clippers carried a 67-52 advantage into halftime after outscoring Miami 43-19 in the second quarter.

Miami continued chipping away at the deficit throughout the second half, but the Clippers still held a 10 point advantage with approximately 4 1/2 minutes remaining in regulation. The Heat responded with a crucial 9-0 run to make it a one possession game and set up a dramatic finish. Miami’s late surge eventually forced overtime, giving the Heat an opportunity to complete the comeback.

Thompson Delivers the Game Winning Shot in Overtime

The overtime period featured several lead changes, with Garland appearing to put Los Angeles in position to escape with a much needed victory. Garland connected on a tiebreaking jumper with 1:58 remaining before adding a floater with 1:19 left to give the Clippers a 116-112 advantage.

However, Miami refused to go away. Adebayo scored inside to cut the deficit to two, and the Clippers were unable to score again. Antetokounmpo grabbed a defensive rebound with 3.8 seconds remaining, setting up Miami’s final possession.

Following a Heat timeout, Antetokounmpo delivered an inbounds pass that found Thompson wide open in the left corner. Thompson calmly knocked down the decisive 3-pointer with one second remaining, giving Miami a stunning 117-116 lead. Los Angeles had one final opportunity, but Kobe Sanders missed a desperation shot at the buzzer as the Heat completed their comeback victory.

Adebayo, Thompson and Antetokounmpo Lead Miami

Adebayo turned in one of his strongest performances of the season, establishing season highs with 35 points and 10 rebounds. His scoring inside helped Miami stay within striking distance during the comeback before his crucial overtime basket brought the Heat within two points. Thompson provided the perimeter shooting Miami needed, finishing with 30 points while connecting on eight 3-pointers.

His final shot proved to be the difference, capping an impressive shooting performance with the biggest basket of the night. Antetokounmpo also delivered an all around performance with 27 points, 14 rebounds and six assists. His defensive rebound and perfectly timed pass to Thompson set up the game winning sequence.

For Los Angeles, Garland led the way with 26 points and seven assists. Rui Hachimura contributed 21 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, while Brook Lopez finished with 20 points and eight rebounds. The Clippers continued playing without Brandon Ingram, who is recovering from an Achilles injury, and Bradley Beal, who is sidelined with a knee injury. Neither player has appeared for Los Angeles this season.

Up Coming NBA Games for Heat and Clippers

The Heat will look to carry their momentum into their next matchup when they travel to California to face the Golden State Warriors on Thursday night. The Clippers will attempt to stop their seven game losing streak when they host the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday night, concluding a three game homestand.
