Driver Falls Victim to Sophisticated Imposter Scam

A South Florida rideshare driver believed he was about to receive a legitimate bonus from his platform, only to discover that more than $2,000 had been stolen from his account. Peter Detore, who drives for Uber part-time, said the ordeal began in December when he received a phone call from someone claiming to be from Uber’s support team. The caller told him there was a complaint alleging he was drinking while on the job and that his account would be closely monitored. Trusting the conversation, Detore engaged with the caller over several days, believing it to be a legitimate investigation.

The Bonus Trap

Several days into the interaction, Detore was told he qualified for a cash bonus as compensation for the alleged complaint. The caller instructed him to enter a gift card number into his Uber app to claim the bonus. Believing the instructions were genuine, Detore complied. Soon after, his Uber wallet showed a series of withdrawals, each ranging from roughly $100 to more than $300. By the time he realized something was wrong, his account had been emptied.

Scope of the Loss

In total, $2,059 was removed from Detore’s account and transferred to an unfamiliar account. Only then did he recognize that he had been targeted by an imposter scam — a scheme in which fraudsters pose as legitimate companies to gain access to victims’ accounts or personal information. Experts note that such scams are becoming increasingly common and often involve highly convincing communications that exploit trust.

Platform Response and Recovery

Detore reported the incident to Uber and local consumer authorities. An Uber spokesperson confirmed they were in contact with him and emphasized that the company never requests sensitive information such as passwords, verification codes, or financial details through unsolicited calls. Following intervention by the NBC6 Responds team, Detore received a one-time reimbursement of $2,060 from Uber to cover his losses.

Protecting Against Scams

Security specialists stress the importance of verifying all communications through official channels rather than responding to unsolicited calls or messages. They recommend unique passwords for each account, enabling multifactor authentication, and avoiding inputting unfamiliar codes or gift card information into apps. Detore hopes his experience serves as a cautionary tale for other gig workers who rely on digital platforms for income. Vigilance is essential, as scammers continue to refine their tactics to exploit trust in well-known services.
