Josh Allen Leads Buffalo in Historic Stadium Debut

Allen puts his stamp on Buffalo’s new home. The Buffalo Bills officially opened their new $2.1 billion stadium Thursday night, but the building quickly became known for something else: Josh Allen’s house.

Allen threw three touchdown passes and ran for two more scores as the Bills defeated the Detroit Lions 41-31 in the first regular-season game at the new Highmark Stadium. The victory gave Buffalo a memorable debut at its new home while continuing the quarterback’s remarkable run of production in a Bills uniform.

The only emotional moment for Allen came before kickoff during the performances of the U.S. and Canadian national anthems. Once the game began, the 30-year-old quarterback looked completely at home in Buffalo’s new digs.

After rewriting many of the franchise’s scoring and passing records during his first eight seasons across the street at the old Highmark Stadium, Allen made history again by scoring the first touchdown at the new facility. He plunged 1 yard into the end zone 5:51 into the game.

Allen later added a 2-yard rushing touchdown, the 83rd rushing score of his career, tying him with Hall of Famer Jim Taylor for 18th on the NFL’s all-time list. It also marked Allen’s sixth career five-touchdown performance, coming just one game after he accounted for four touchdowns in Buffalo’s season-opening 36-31 victory at Houston.

Bills Dominate Early

Buffalo came out firing, scoring on each of its first four possessions and building a commanding lead over Detroit. Allen connected with Josh Palmer for a 43-yard touchdown before finding Dawson Knox for a 2-yard score and Dalton Kincaid for a 16-yard touchdown. The Bills continued to pile up yards while Detroit’s injury-depleted defense struggled to slow them down.

Buffalo gained 299 yards and scored 27 points in the first half alone before finishing with 446 total yards. Allen completed 20 of 31 passes for 248 yards while adding 69 yards on the ground. Running back James Cook provided another major spark, rushing for 134 yards and delivering the decisive touchdown with a 1-yard run with 2:50 remaining.

Buffalo’s 41 points were the third-most scored by a team in its regular-season stadium debut. Only the Dallas Cowboys, with 44 points in their first game at Texas Stadium in 1971, and the Miami Dolphins, with 42 in their first game at Joe Robbie Stadium in 1987, scored more.

Lions Rally but Cannot Complete Comeback

Goff and St. Brown keep Detroit within striking distance. Detroit’s offense provided plenty of production, but the Lions were unable to overcome their slow start and defensive struggles. Jared Goff completed 26 of 38 passes for 327 yards and four touchdowns. Amon-Ra St. Brown was particularly effective, catching nine passes for 142 yards and two touchdowns.

Jahmyr Gibbs also scored on an 11-yard reception, while Sam LaPorta added a 1-yard touchdown catch. St. Brown and Gibbs have now scored in the same game 22 times, tying the Cleveland combination of Paul Warfield and Leroy Kelly for fourth-most such games by a receiver-running back duo in NFL history.

Gibbs, however, was held to just 52 rushing yards as Detroit’s banged-up offensive line struggled to create running lanes and protect Goff.

Buffalo Answers Detroit’s Fourth Quarter Push

The Lions briefly made things interesting early in the fourth quarter when LaPorta caught a 1-yard touchdown pass to cut Buffalo’s advantage to 34-24 with four minutes gone in the final period. Detroit could not build on the momentum. Backed up at its own 10-yard line on the ensuing possession, the Lions went three-and-out.

Goff had two passes tipped by Deone Walker, while Gibbs was stopped for no gain. Buffalo took advantage and put the game away on Cook’s 1-yard touchdown run with 2:50 remaining. Detroit’s defensive problems began early. On Buffalo’s second drive, two Lions defenders converged on DJ Moore in the flat, leaving Palmer wide open downfield for his 43-yard touchdown reception.

The Lions also lost a potential turnover on Buffalo’s next possession. Rock Ya-Sin was called for holding, negating Skyler Gill-Howard’s interception of a tipped pass.

A New Era Begins in Buffalo

The Bills’ victory provided an appropriate opening chapter for their new stadium, with Allen once again at the center of the franchise’s biggest moments. Buffalo improved to 2-0 after opening the season with its win at Houston, while Detroit will look to regroup after its defensive struggles and offensive-line issues.

The Lions return home to host the New York Jets on Sept. 27. The Bills will also be at home Sept. 27, hosting the New England Patriots.
