Hollywood Producer Sentenced to 146 Years for Murders of Two Women and Series of Sexual Assaults
Los Angeles — Hollywood producer David Brian Pearce, 43, was sentenced Wednesday to 146 years to life in prison for the 2021 drug overdose deaths of model Christy Giles and her friend Hilda Marcela Cabrales-Arzola, and for a string of violent sexual assaults on seven other women spanning more than a decade.
A Deadly Night in Los Angeles
On November 13, 2021, 24-year-old Giles and 26-year-old Cabrales-Arzola were taken to separate Los Angeles hospitals two hours apart after a night out in the city’s entertainment district. Giles was pronounced dead upon arrival at Southern California Hospital in Culver City. Cabrales-Arzola, an architect originally from Mexico, was found unconscious outside Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles and removed from life support weeks later, one day before her 27th birthday.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner classified both deaths as homicides, finding multiple drugs in their systems, including fentanyl, cocaine, GHB, ketamine, and ecstasy. Prosecutors said Pearce provided the drugs to incapacitate the women so he could sexually assault them, describing him as a “sexual predator” who preyed on women for years under the guise of Hollywood nightlife and modeling parties.
The Conviction
After two and a half days of deliberation, a Los Angeles County jury found Pearce guilty on two counts of first-degree murder and seven counts of sexual assault including forcible rape, rape of an unconscious person, and sexual penetration by force.
Deputy District Attorney Catherine Mariano told jurors there was no innocent explanation for Pearce’s DNA being found on both women, including under Cabrales-Arzola’s fingernails. Prosecutors said he knew the lethal danger of the drugs he used, especially fentanyl, but continued to administer them to victims to gain control.
Pearce’s defense attorney at trial, Jeff Voll, called the evidence “overwhelming” but argued that the deaths were the result of accidental overdoses, claiming, “They all got sick off of fentanyl, all of them, and unfortunately, two passed.” Voll said he had advised Pearce not to testify, later admitting, “My client’s testimony didn’t help.”
The Families Speak
The victims’ families have fought for years to ensure the women were not dismissed as “party girls” who overdosed. Dusty Giles, Christy’s mother, said after the verdict that she was “so proud” of prosecutors and detectives who took the case seriously from the start.
“As much as it hurts to lose my baby girl, her body was able to tell the story,” Giles said. “They were reputable women who met the wrong man and that’s it.”
Giles’ husband, Jan Cilliers, said he was “very happy that the jury saw what we were seeing all along.”
The Pattern of Assault
The sexual assault charges against Pearce stemmed from attacks on seven women between 2007 and 2020, as well as testimony from five additional women who alleged similar abuse. Several described being drugged and waking up disoriented and injured. Prosecutors called Pearce a serial predator who used his Hollywood connections to lure victims, often under the pretense of professional meetings.
Deputy District Attorney Seth Carmack told jurors in closing arguments:
“The defendant is a rapist and now he is a murderer.”
Co-Defendant and the Aftermath
Co-defendant Brandt Walter Osborn, 46, faced charges of being an accessory after the fact for allegedly helping Pearce dispose of the victims. Jurors deadlocked on his charges, and a mistrial was declared. Osborn is awaiting a possible retrial. Evidence showed Osborn and Pearce used a Toyota Prius with no license plates to transport the women’s bodies to hospitals hours after the overdoses occurred. Witnesses testified that Pearce told a friend, “Dead girls don’t talk.”
Sentencing and Justice
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Eleanor J. Hunter handed down the sentence Wednesday, denying Pearce’s request for a new trial and citing the “depravity and repeated predation” of his crimes. Pearce showed no visible emotion as the sentence was read.
For the families of Christy Giles and Hilda Cabrales-Arzola, the verdict marked the end of a years-long fight for accountability and the beginning of closure.
“The man who killed my daughter is going away forever,” Giles’ mother said outside the courthouse. “That’s the justice she deserved.”
