Chourio Sparks Eighth-Inning Rally to Overturn Deficit

The Milwaukee Brewers staged a late game surge on Monday, rallying in the eighth inning and clinging to a thrilling 4-3 victory over the rival Chicago Cubs. Milwaukee entered the bottom of the eighth trailing 2-1 after Cubs starter Matthew Boyd dominated through seven scoreless frames. Boyd’s outing unravelled when Garrett Mitchell drew a leadoff walk and Joey Ortiz doubled to put runners on second and third, ending Boyd’s day on his 100th pitch.

Jackson Chourio greeted Cubs reliever Ryan Zeferjahn by driving a grounder through a drawn-in infield into right field, driving home two runs to flip the score in Milwaukee’s favor at 3-2. After Chourio stole second and Brice Turang walked, Zeferjahn struck out William Contreras. Reliever Jacob Webb then entered the game, walking Jake Bauers to load the bases before Christian Yelich delivered a crucial sacrifice fly to stretch the Brewers’ lead to 4-2. Abner Uribe earned the win (5-2) after retiring the side in order during the top of the eighth.

Cubs Mount Ninth-Inning Comeback Against Megill

Chicago attempted a furious comeback in the top of the ninth inning against Milwaukee closer Trevor Megill, producing high drama in the final frame. Trailing 4-2, the Cubs nearly narrowed the gap when Pedro Ramírez who had already homered in the fifth inning hit a deep one-out drive that was robbed at the wall by a leaping catch from right fielder Luis Lara.

Pete Crow-Armstrong, who had previously gone 4-for-39 with 18 strikeouts against Milwaukee this season, followed by launching a 400-foot solo home run over the wall in right-center. The home run was the first allowed by Megill all season, pulling Chicago within a single run.

Chourio Seals Victory as Brewers Extend Division Lead

Megill managed to secure his 27th save in 29 opportunities on the final play of the night. With two outs, Seiya Suzuki hit a fly ball to left field, where Chourio made a spectacular diving catch to secure the 4-3 win. Crow-Armstrong also stood out for Chicago’s offense, singling and scoring in the seventh before his late homer.

With the loss in the opening match of this three-game series, the Cubs fell eight games back of the MLB-leading Brewers in the NL Central division. The series continues Tuesday night, featuring Milwaukee starter Jacob Misiorowski (14-5, 1.87 ERA) facing off against Chicago’s David Peterson (7-8, 5.39 ERA).
