Lions Escape Saints 31-30 in Overtime After Nearly Blowing Three-Touchdown Lead

Detroit Holds Off New Orleans After Wild Comeback

The Detroit Lions escaped with a 31-30 overtime victory over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, but their season-opening win was anything but comfortable. Detroit built a three touchdown lead in the third quarter before watching New Orleans storm back to tie the game and force overtime.

The Lions then needed to defend a two point conversion attempt in overtime to preserve the victory, while a crucial replay review earlier in the game also went in their favor when a Saints touchdown was overturned. Still, the Lions found a way to leave New Orleans with a win.

Gibbs Powers Detroit’s Offense

Detroit was at its best offensively when running back Jahmyr Gibbs had the football. Gibbs delivered a career best performance, rushing 29 times for 156 yards and two touchdowns while adding five receptions for 30 yards.

Quarterback Jared Goff also played an efficient game, completing 26 of 39 passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns without committing a turnover. His ability to protect the football proved critical as the Lions survived New Orleans’ late surge.

Detroit advanced to the New Orleans 1-yard line late in the fourth quarter with a chance to put the game away, but a holding penalty pushed the Lions backward and forced them to settle for a field goal. The kick gave Detroit a 24-17 advantage with 2:32 remaining.

Saints Rally From 21-Point Deficit

New Orleans refused to go away. The Saints finally found their offensive rhythm late in the third quarter, scoring touchdowns on Kendre Miller’s 8-yard run and a 1-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Shough to a fully extended Devaughn Vele. The two scores pulled New Orleans within a touchdown and completely changed the momentum.

Shough, making his mark after a promising rookie season, continued to make plays down the stretch. Trailing by seven late in regulation, he converted a fourth and 12 from the Saints’ 23-yard line with a 15-yard completion to rookie receiver Bryce Lance.

Three plays later, Shough connected with Chris Olave for 43 yards, setting up his 9-yard touchdown pass to Juwan Johnson with 1:07 remaining. The score tied the game at 24-24. Detroit went three and out on its ensuing possession, giving New Orleans an opportunity to win the game in regulation. However, Ryan Wright missed a 62-yard field-goal attempt as time expired, sending the game to overtime.

Shough’s Big Numbers Come With Costly Mistakes

Shough finished with impressive statistics despite the turnovers that ultimately proved costly. He completed 35 of 56 passes for 410 yards and three touchdowns, but he also threw two interceptions and lost a fumble.

New Orleans’ offense continued to make big plays in overtime, putting the Saints in position to win the game. Shough eventually found Noah Fant for an 8-yard touchdown pass in the end zone, giving New Orleans a chance to finish the comeback.

Coach Kellen Moore elected to go for the win rather than kick the extra point and play for another possession. Shough’s two-point attempt, however, fell incomplete in the end zone. That ended the Saints’ comeback bid and allowed Detroit to escape with a 31-30 victory.

The Lions may not have played a perfect game, but they did enough when it mattered most. Goff protected the football, Gibbs carried the offense for long stretches, and Detroit survived a furious New Orleans rally to begin the season 1-0.

New Orleans will look to rebound when it travels to face the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 20. Detroit faces another major test immediately, traveling to Buffalo to take on the Bills on Sept. 17.
