Los Angeles Lakers Hold Off Portland Trail Blazers for Fourth Straight Victory

Los Angeles Lakers Luka Doncic Scores 53 Points

The Los Angeles Lakers continued their winning streak Friday night behind another extraordinary performance from Luka Doncic, who scored 53 points to lead the team to a 124-118 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers in an NBA Cup matchup. Doncic delivered his 11th career 50 point game and his fourth since joining the Lakers, hitting a crucial jumper in the lane with 28 seconds remaining to help secure Los Angeles’ fourth consecutive victory.

The Lakers saw a 12 point fourth quarter lead shrink to four, but Doncic and Austin Reaves combined for 10 points down the stretch to keep Portland from completing the comeback. Reaves finished with 25 points, while Walker Kessler contributed 16 points and 12 rebounds for Los Angeles. The victory also avenged the Lakers’ 136-129 home loss to Portland on Oct. 27.

Doncic Continues Remarkable Scoring Run

Doncic was once again nearly unstoppable, extending an incredible seven-game stretch in which he has scored at least 35 points in every contest. He has recorded six 40-point performances during that span, including four consecutive games, along with a 37 point outing.

The Slovenian superstar scored 20 points in the third quarter alone, reaching the 40-point mark for the sixth time in seven games. He finished with 53 points, five rebounds and five assists, continuing a remarkable streak of seven consecutive games with at least 35 points, five rebounds, five assists and five three pointers.

Doncic also made Lakers history. He joined Elgin Baylor, Kobe Bryant and George Mikan as the only players in franchise history to score at least 40 points in four consecutive regular-season games. He also passed Mikan for the fifth most 40 point performances in Lakers history, accomplishing the feat after just 101 regular season games with Los Angeles.

Despite struggling from beyond the arc early, Doncic still found a way to deliver memorable moments. The Lakers opened the game by missing their first 15 three-point attempts, with Doncic missing his first five. However, he provided an incredible highlight just before halftime, banking in a 61-foot shot from the opposite free throw circle at the buzzer.

Lakers Overcome 16-Point Deficit Before Holding Off Portland

Los Angeles had to overcome an early challenge after falling behind by 16 points in the second quarter. The Lakers responded with a strong third quarter performance, scoring 17 consecutive points to erase Portland’s advantage. Doncic led the charge, outscoring the entire Portland team 20-15 in the third quarter as Los Angeles seized control of the game.

The Lakers carried that momentum into the fourth quarter, building a 16-point advantage early in the period with a 32-11 run. However, Portland refused to go away, repeatedly cutting the deficit to four points. The Trail Blazers were unable to get any closer, as Doncic delivered his pivotal jumper with 28 seconds remaining before he and Reaves combined to score 10 points in the closing moments to put the game away.

Avdija and Lillard Lead Trail Blazers

Deni Avdija led Portland with 22 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds, while Damian Lillard also scored 22 points. The Trail Blazers entered Friday’s matchup having lost just once in their first stretch of the season, but the defeat marked their second loss of the campaign and came in the finale of a four game road trip. Portland showed plenty of fight after building its early lead and making a late push, but it couldn’t find a way to slow down Doncic when the game was on the line.

Up Coming NBA Games for Trail Blazers and Lakers

The Trail Blazers will return home Saturday to host the San Antonio Spurs as they look to bounce back from the road loss. The Lakers will continue their road trip Sunday when they travel to Detroit to face the Pistons, looking to extend their winning streak to five games.
