Around 5:05 p.m., the child managed to slip past barricades at a closed monorail station and began walking along the elevated track nearly 100 feet above the ground. About 20 minutes later, guests spotted him and panic spread throughout the crowd as the boy inched dangerously close to falling.
A Father’s Fear Versus Instinct
That’s when John Sampson, a father of three from Bucks County, jumped into action. Despite being afraid of heights, he climbed onto the roof of a nearby snack stand and pulled himself up onto the track. “Dad instincts kicked in, and then [I was] just trying to figure things out and how to get up there as fast as possible,” he said afterward. Ignoring the screams around him, Sampson focused only on the child. In a dramatic moment captured by bystanders, he reached the boy, lifted him into his arms, and carefully carried him to safety. “Thank goodness he came straight into my arms,” Sampson recalled.

The boy was uninjured and reunited with his family within 23 minutes of being reported missing. His relatives later contacted Sampson to personally thank him for his bravery. Hersheypark Responds
Hersheypark officials confirmed the monorail was closed and fenced off at the time of the incident, but the park has launched a safety review to determine how the child was able to reach the restricted area. “We are grateful for the vigilance of our guests and the swift response of our team,” a spokesperson said. The park emphasized that additional measures will be considered to prevent future incidents.

While Sampson downplays his role, calling himself “just a guy in the right place at the right time,” his quick thinking demonstrates the instinctive power of parental protection.
