Marlins Stay Hot, Beat Blue Jays 8-2 for Fourth Straight Victory

The Miami Marlins kept their momentum rolling Monday night, stretching their winning streak to four games with an 8-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre.

Miami got contributions throughout the lineup while right-hander Janson Junk delivered a steady outing to earn his first victory since April 28. Junk (3-5) worked five innings, allowing just one run on eight hits all singles while walking none and striking out three.

The Marlins continued their surprising success north of the border, improving to 14-5 all-time at Rogers Centre.

Offensively, Kyle Stowers and Javier Sanoja each collected two doubles and drove in two runs. Canadian outfielder Owen Caissie also had a strong night, finishing 2 for 4 with two RBIs in front of a hometown crowd.

Toronto rookie right-hander Trey Yesavage entered the game having allowed only three earned runs combined across his first five starts of the season, but Miami’s lineup consistently squared him up. The Marlins tagged Yesavage (2-2) for five runs on five hits in 6 2/3 innings. Every hit against him went for a double. He walked two and struck out six.

Miami struck first in the opening inning when Otto Lopez lifted a sacrifice fly to give the Marlins a 1-0 lead while the Blue Jays played under open skies at home for the first time this season.

The Marlins added on in the fifth when Sanoja and Caissie ripped back-to-back RBI doubles for a 2-0 advantage. Toronto answered in the bottom half as Yohendrick Piñango singled home a run to cut the deficit in half.

Miami quickly regained control in the sixth. Stowers dropped a two-out RBI double into shallow left field in front of a charging Piñango, and after Jakob Marsee drew a walk, Sanoja followed with a two-run double that sailed over the rookie outfielder’s head to break the game open.

Toronto’s lone highlight came from Ernie Clement, who connected on a solo home run. The Blue Jays have now dropped two straight after winning four in a row prior to the skid.

The Blue Jays were without star slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who sat out after being hit on the right elbow by a pitch during Sunday’s loss to Pittsburgh.

The series continues Tuesday with Miami expected to send Sandy Alcantara (3-3, 4.00 ERA) to the mound. Toronto is scheduled to counter with right-hander Braydon Fisher (2-1, 2.73 ERA) serving as the opener.
