Matthew Tkachuk’s Hat Trick Lifts Panthers Past Red Wings, Snapping Four-Game Slide

Matthew Tkachuk delivered a vintage performance Friday night, scoring his sixth career hat trick to propel the Florida Panthers to a 3-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings and end a frustrating four-game losing streak.

Tkachuk opened the scoring early in the third period with a power-play goal, redirecting Sam Reinhart’s shot past Detroit goalie John Gibson just 35 seconds into the frame to give Florida a 2-1 lead. He later sealed the game with an empty-net goal with 1:52 remaining, completing a standout night for the star forward, who has eight goals in 16 games this season.

This marked his first hat trick since Jan. 9, 2024, against St. Louis, and came after he made his season debut on Jan. 19 following offseason surgery to repair a torn adductor muscle and sports hernia.

Sergei Bobrovsky was solid in net for the Panthers, stopping 27 shots after Florida opted not to trade the 37-year-old goaltender before Friday’s deadline. Despite Detroit’s efforts, including Alex DeBrincat’s 33rd goal of the season, Florida’s defense held firm, and the Red Wings were unable to capitalize.

Detroit captain Dylan Larkin left the game midway through the third period with an apparent leg injury after an awkward fall in the Panthers’ zone. He skated slowly to the boards and immediately headed to the locker room. John Gibson finished with 20 saves for Detroit.

The win keeps Florida in the hunt for a playoff spot, though the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions remain eight points behind Boston for the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. If they fail to make the postseason, they would become the first back-to-back Cup winner to miss the playoffs since Los Angeles in 2014-15.

The Panthers and Red Wings meet again on Tuesday night in Florida, where the Panthers will look to continue their momentum.
