The Miami Hurricanes will open their 2026 college football season Friday night with a cross country trip to face the Stanford Cardinal in what should be a major early-season test for the Cardinal.
Stanford enters the matchup with confidence after a dramatic victory over Hawaii, but there will be little time to enjoy the result. The Cardinal immediately turn around and welcome the No. 7 Hurricanes, a team with significantly greater expectations and talent.
Stanford’s win over Hawaii provided plenty of positives, particularly offensively. The Cardinal scored 37 points and piled up more than 480 yards of total offense. Quarterback Micah Alejado also showed plenty of ability, throwing for nearly 270 yards while completing 60% of his passes.
But duplicating that production against Miami is a completely different challenge.
The Hurricanes spent the offseason adding talent to address the holes left by last year’s defense, and Friday night will provide an immediate opportunity to see whether those additions can make Miami one of the nation’s most difficult defensive units.
Alejado was able to find success against Hawaii, but Stanford will be facing a much faster and more talented Miami defense. The Cardinal could have trouble sustaining drives if the Hurricanes consistently win at the line of scrimmage and force Stanford into obvious passing situations.
Stanford’s offense should have opportunities, particularly with Miami playing its first game of the season, but expecting another 480-yard performance would be asking a lot.
The biggest advantage could come at quarterback. Miami quarterback Darian Mensah enters the season with considerably more talent around him and should have opportunities to attack a Stanford defense that is facing its first true test of the season.
If Mensah settles in quickly, Miami’s offense could put Stanford under pressure throughout the night. The Hurricanes don’t have much on the schedule immediately following this game, with Florida A&M coming to Miami on Sept. 10, making Friday’s matchup an important opportunity to establish momentum.
With the Hurricanes ranked No. 7 entering the season, there is also pressure to live up to the preseason hype.
The betting line has moved substantially toward Miami. The number opened with the Hurricanes as 21.5-point favorites before climbing to -25.5 at some sportsbooks. With some -23.5 numbers still available, that would be the preferred number for backing Miami.
At -23.5, there is still enough value to consider the Hurricanes, particularly if they come out aggressively and establish control early.
However, if the spread continues climbing, waiting for a better number could make sense. Miami is playing its first game of the season, and some offensive rust is certainly possible.
The over/under is around 47.5 points, and the early-season factor could make the under appealing. Miami may not be operating at peak efficiency offensively, while Stanford could struggle to generate consistent production against the Hurricanes’ revamped defense.
Stanford deserves credit for its impressive win over Hawaii, but the Cardinal are stepping into an entirely different level of competition.
Miami has the superior roster, more defensive talent and a quarterback capable of exploiting Stanford’s weaknesses. The Hurricanes should control the game defensively and gradually pull away.
The Cardinal may have difficulty reproducing the offensive fireworks from Week 0, while Miami should eventually find enough plays to create separation. The Hurricanes should make an early statement that their preseason No. 7 ranking is justified.
