The Cleveland Cavaliers opened their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series in emphatic fashion Saturday night, defeating the Toronto Raptors 126–113 in Game 1 behind a dominant scoring performance from Donovan Mitchell and a breakout postseason effort from Max Strus. Cleveland now leads the best-of-seven series 1–0 and will host Game 2 on Monday night.
Mitchell led the way with 32 points, setting the tone early and maintaining offensive pressure throughout the contest. His ability to control the tempo and create scoring opportunities helped Cleveland withstand several Toronto surges and ultimately secure a comfortable victory on their home floor.
The biggest surprise of the night came from Strus, who delivered a playoff career-high 24 points off the bench in a remarkable return to postseason action. Strus, who missed the first 67 games of the season after suffering a broken left foot during offseason training, provided a massive spark with his perimeter shooting and energy. He scored 11 points during a pivotal Cavaliers run that stretched across the end of the second quarter and into the third, swinging the momentum decisively in Cleveland’s favor.
James Harden contributed a strong all-around performance with 22 points and 10 assists, orchestrating the offense with precision, while Evan Mobley added 17 points and seven rebounds to anchor Cleveland’s interior presence on both ends of the floor.
Toronto showed resilience despite playing its first playoff game since 2022 and being short-handed without starting point guard Immanuel Quickley, who missed the game with a mild right hamstring strain. Jamal Shead stepped into the starting lineup and responded impressively with 17 points, including five 3-pointers, helping keep the Raptors within striking distance early.
RJ Barrett paced Toronto with 24 points, and Scottie Barnes added 21, as the Raptors battled throughout the first half. Barrett’s 3-pointer midway through the second quarter trimmed Cleveland’s lead to just four points at 45–41, briefly shifting the momentum toward Toronto.
However, the Cavaliers responded with a decisive burst that effectively changed the game.
Cleveland closed the second quarter and opened the third with a dominant 27–9 run over a stretch of just more than eight minutes. During that span, the Cavaliers shot 10-of-16 from the field, including 5-of-8 from beyond the arc, with Strus leading the charge. The surge pushed the advantage into double digits and gave Cleveland firm control for the remainder of the night.
The Cavaliers continued to extend their lead into the fourth quarter, reaching their largest margin at 100–76 following a Sam Merrill 3-pointer just 13 seconds into the final period. Although Toronto mounted a late push to narrow the gap, Cleveland’s balanced scoring and efficient shooting ensured the outcome was never seriously threatened.
One of Cleveland’s most impressive defensive efforts came against Toronto’s bench unit. The Raptors entered the game averaging a league-best 18.9 points per game from their reserves, but the Cavaliers held them to a season-low three points, a key factor in the victory.
With Mitchell leading the offense, Strus providing unexpected scoring punch, and Cleveland’s defense limiting Toronto’s depth production, the Cavaliers established early control of the series and will look to build on that momentum in Game 2 Monday night as they attempt to take a commanding 2–0 lead.
