Monday Night Football: 49ers Hold Off Commanders 23-17 to Improve to 6-0

49ers Win Behind Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey

The San Francisco 49ers built a commanding lead behind quarterback Brock Purdy and running back Christian McCaffrey before relying on their defense to finish the job Monday night, holding off the Washington Commanders 23-17 to remain undefeated through six games.

Purdy threw a touchdown pass to George Kittle, McCaffrey rushed for two scores, and San Francisco built a 20-point advantage before surviving a late Washington rally. The 49ers made two crucial defensive stops in the closing minutes to secure their sixth consecutive victory and extend their best start to a season since opening 8-0 in 2019, when they advanced to the Super Bowl.

The Commanders, meanwhile, fell short of completing a comeback after quarterback Jayden Daniels threw two second half touchdown passes to cut the deficit to six points. San Francisco’s defense delivered when it mattered most, preserving the victory in a game that appeared firmly in the 49ers’ control for much of the first half.

Purdy, McCaffrey Lead San Francisco’s Early Surge

Purdy set the tone immediately, connecting with Mike Evans for a 24-yard gain on the third play of the game before finding Kittle for an 11-yard touchdown to cap San Francisco’s opening drive. The 49ers continued their fast start with a touchdown on their second possession, as McCaffrey scored on a 1-yard run to extend the lead. San Francisco’s offense controlled the first half, consistently moving the chains while Washington struggled to generate momentum.

McCaffrey added his second rushing touchdown late in the half, pushing the 49ers’ advantage to 20-3. San Francisco recorded 17 first downs before halftime, matching Washington’s total number of offensive plays during that stretch.

The 49ers also dominated the yardage battle, outgaining the Commanders 303-90 in the first half. Their balanced attack allowed San Francisco to dictate the pace and put Washington in a difficult position heading into the break. Purdy finished 21 of 29 for 264 yards and one touchdown, continuing his productive season while helping the 49ers maintain their unbeaten record.

His performance also carried a statistical milestone. After reaching the 1,500-attempt threshold required to qualify, Purdy officially became the highest rated passer in NFL history, with a career passer rating of 105.6, ahead of Lamar Jackson’s 102.7.

Commanders Rally Behind Daniels

Washington struggled to keep pace during the opening half but showed renewed life after halftime as Daniels attempted to lead the Commanders back into the game. The San Francisco defense tightened after the break, limiting Washington’s opportunities and holding the Commanders to three first downs and 72 yards during the second half’s early stages.

However, Daniels eventually found openings and threw two touchdown passes to bring Washington within 23-17. The rally put pressure on a 49ers offense that had been largely contained after its explosive first half. San Francisco managed little production following the break, forcing its defense to protect the lead.

Washington’s comeback bid came after a disappointing finish to the previous week, when the Commanders tied the New York Giants after mismanaging the clock in overtime and losing an opportunity to attempt a game winning field goal. Against San Francisco, Washington again found itself needing a late breakthrough, but the 49ers’ defense refused to let the game slip away.

49ers Defense Delivers Two Critical Late Stops

With 1:54 remaining, Washington threatened to complete its comeback, but San Francisco defensive back Malik Mustapha broke up a fourth down pass intended for Treylon Burks near the goal line.

The stop preserved the 49ers’ six-point lead and forced the Commanders to rely on their defense to get the ball back. Washington eventually regained possession at its own 46-yard line with 52 seconds remaining. Daniels moved the Commanders to the San Francisco 28 before an intentional grounding penalty pushed Washington back and left the team facing one final opportunity from the 40-yard line.

The 49ers ended the threat when Keion White and Ogbo Okoronkwo combined to sack Daniels before he could get off a desperation pass. The final defensive stand sealed San Francisco’s 23-17 victory and kept the team’s perfect record intact. Although the 49ers’ offense slowed considerably after halftime, the defense delivered the plays needed to finish the game.

Shanahan and Quinn Renew Their Coaching History

Monday night’s matchup also brought together San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan and Washington coach Dan Quinn, who share a history dating to their time with the Atlanta Falcons. Shanahan served as Atlanta’s offensive coordinator for two seasons under Quinn, a partnership that culminated in a Super Bowl appearance following the 2016 season. The Falcons famously surrendered a 28-3 lead against the New England Patriots in that game, suffering one of the most memorable collapses in Super Bowl history.

The two coaches have faced each other as head coaches since then, including a 2019 meeting in which Quinn’s Atlanta team defeated Shanahan’s San Francisco squad. Shanahan also won three matchups against Quinn when Quinn served as the Dallas Cowboys’ defensive coordinator. Shanahan has credited Quinn with teaching him the importance of people skills in the head-coaching role, making their meetings more than just another game on the schedule.

49ers Remain Undefeated Through Six Games

San Francisco’s victory extended its winning streak to six games and reinforced its position among the NFL’s early-season contenders. The 49ers followed an emotional road victory over division rival Seattle with another win, demonstrating their ability to withstand pressure even when their offense loses momentum. Purdy’s efficient passing, McCaffrey’s two rushing touchdowns and a decisive defensive finish proved enough to overcome Washington’s second-half surge.

For the Commanders, the loss marked another frustrating result after a difficult finish against the Giants the previous week. Daniels sparked a late rally, but Washington could not convert its final opportunities into points. The 49ers will look to carry their unbeaten momentum into their next game, while the Commanders must regroup after another close finish left them searching for answers.
