Monstropolis Takes the Field: “Monsters Funday Football” Brings Eagles–Chargers MNF Showdown Into the World of Monsters, Inc.

The NFL, ESPN, Disney, and Pixar are teaming up once again to turn Monday Night Football into a vibrant animated event — and this year, fans will take a trip straight into Monstropolis. Monsters Funday Football will reimagine the Philadelphia Eagles’ Week 14 matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers inside the iconic Monsters, Inc. headquarters, transforming SoFi Stadium into a fully animated adventure broadcast live in real time.

The alternate presentation continues one of ESPN’s most innovative traditions, following Toy Story Funday Football (2023) and The Simpsons Funday Football (2024). For the first time, the animated telecast will air across ESPN2, Disney Channel, Disney XD, the new ESPN App, and continue streaming on Disney+ and NFL+ (mobile), offering the widest distribution yet. The traditional MNF broadcast — featuring Joe Buck, Troy Aikman, Lisa Salters, and Laura Rutledge — will air simultaneously on ESPN, ABC, ESPN Deportes, and the ESPN App. Both telecasts kick off at 8 p.m. ET.

Internationally, Monsters Funday Football will be carried live on ESPN platforms and Disney+ across more than 155 markets, including Latin America, Australia, New Zealand, Sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean, the Netherlands, and Canada (TSN+). Video on Demand will be available globally on Disney+ shortly after the game.

Monsters Funday Football is built on the same groundbreaking technology that has powered each Funday Football installment. Using the NFL’s Next Gen Stats player tracking data, Sony’s Beyond Sports virtual recreation engine, and Sony’s Hawk-Eye Innovations optical tracking, every play from the live Eagles–Chargers game will be animated in real time.

Every player — from Jalen Hurts and A.J. Brown to Justin Herbert and Keenan Allen — will appear as motion-enabled animated versions of themselves, moving throughout the Monstropolis world with astonishing accuracy. Each run, throw, block, and tackle is translated instantly into a virtual recreation inside the Monsters, Inc. building, bringing football and Pixar storytelling together seamlessly.

This year’s alternate broadcast follows the success of previous themed worlds like Andy’s bedroom and Springfield’s Atom’s Stadium — but now, fans will enter the doors of Monsters, Inc. itself.

The game will unfold on the Cheer Floor, a reimagined twist on the famous Scare Floor from the 2001 Pixar film. Instead of gathering screams, thousands of monsters will pack the stands generating thunderous cheers stored in glowing Cheer Canisters, a playful nod to the original film’s Scream Canisters.

At the center of it all: Pixar legends Mike Wazowski and James P. “Sulley” Sullivan. The beloved duo will serve as the broadcast’s animated hosts — and occasionally, as surprise participants. Much like Homer and Bart Simpson swooping in for spotlight moments last year, Mike and Sulley will jump into key offensive or defensive plays, adding comedic chaos and energy to the football action. Sulley will join Herbert and the Chargers, while Mike aligns with Hurts and the Eagles, each competing not only for a game victory but for the coveted title of Cheer Champion.

The Funday Football initiative has become one of ESPN’s most creative undertakings, helping younger viewers engage with the NFL through imaginative worlds and recognizable characters. Monsters Funday Football continues that tradition, blending family-friendly charm with professional football intensity.

From cartoonishly oversized tackle animations to monster-filled stands and the magic doors of Monsters, Inc., the broadcast will immerse fans in Pixar’s universe while maintaining the integrity and drama of a real NFL game.

Whether you’re tuning in for Hurts vs. Herbert, Mike vs. Sulley, or the chance to see how football looks inside Monstropolis, this year’s Funday Football promises to be one of the most visually stunning sports presentations ever created.

When the Eagles and Chargers kick off on Dec. 8, fans won’t just get a football game — they’ll get an unforgettable animated spectacle powered by Emmy-winning technology, world-class animation, and the unmistakable heart of Monsters, Inc..

In Monstropolis, football runs on laughter and cheers. And on this night, one team will walk away with more than a win — they’ll leave with bragging rights as the Cheer Champion of Monsters Funday Football.
