Napoleon Solo Headlines Loaded Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park Saturday February 28th

The road to Churchill Downs runs straight through South Florida this weekend, as Fountain of Youth Stakes headlines a loaded Saturday card at Gulfstream Park. The Grade 2 Derby prep offers a $425,000 purse and valuable qualifying points on a 50-25-15-10-5 scale, making it a pivotal early-season test for some of the nation’s top 3-year-olds.

At the center of attention is Napoleon Solo, a colt with both elite credentials and unanswered questions. Trained by Chad Summers, the son of Liam’s Map enters as the field’s lone Grade 1 winner, having dominated the Champagne Stakes last October at Aqueduct Racetrack. That front-running performance stamped him as a serious Derby prospect, but Saturday marks his first start in nearly five months after connections opted to bypass the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.

Despite the layoff, Napoleon Solo has trained sharply at Palm Meadows, including a pair of bullet works in February. Drawn in post 7, he brings an unblemished record—two starts, two wins by a combined 11 3/4 lengths—and the look of a colt with immense upside stretching out to 1 1/16 miles for the first time this season.

Still, this is far from a one-horse race. Commandment, trained by Brad Cox, enters off a dominant 6 3/4-length score in the Mucho Macho Man Stakes at Gulfstream in early January. The son of Into Mischief picks up leading rider Irad Ortiz Jr., a combination that demands respect in any graded stakes setting.

From the rail, Jackson Hole brings intrigue as an unbeaten colt trained by Todd Pletcher, a four-time winner of this race. The son of Nyquist—himself a Kentucky Derby winner—has been visually impressive in two starts, including a 5 1/2-length allowance victory at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots. With Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez aboard, he looms as a serious contender stepping into stakes company.

Another lightly raced but dangerous runner is Chief Wallabee, trained by Bill Mott. The son of Constitution broke his maiden in sharp fashion at Gulfstream and now takes a significant class jump. Mott, who captured last year’s Fountain of Youth with eventual Horse of the Year Sovereignty, knows exactly how to develop a Derby contender.

Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. will be well represented with three entrants. Bravaro, runner-up in the Holy Bull Stakes, appears poised for another forward effort under Tyler Gaffalione. Stablemate Bull by the Horns, a son of Essential Quality, makes his stakes debut, while Solitude Dude, by Yaupon, enters undefeated in three starts—including a victory in the Swale Stakes—and will test two turns for the first time with Flavien Prat in the irons.

With a full field expected and multiple unbeaten or lightly raced contenders stepping into deeper waters, Saturday’s Fountain of Youth shapes up as one of the most revealing Kentucky Derby preps of the early season. For Napoleon Solo, it’s a chance to validate his Grade 1 pedigree off the layoff. For the rest, it’s an opportunity to announce themselves on the national stage—and begin the march toward the first Saturday in May.
