Croatia Edges Panama 1-0 to Keep World Cup Hopes Alive

Croatia kept its FIFA World Cup knockout-stage ambitions alive on Tuesday with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama in Group L at BMO Field, thanks to a second-half strike from substitute Ante Budimir.

After a sluggish opening 45 minutes in Toronto, Croatia finally found the breakthrough in the 54th minute when Josip Stanišić delivered a perfectly weighted curling cross into the penalty area. Budimir, who had entered the match just four minutes earlier, timed his run perfectly and tapped the ball into an open net to give the Vatreni a crucial lead.

The victory moves Croatia to three points in Group L and leaves everything to play for heading into Saturday’s final round of group-stage matches. Meanwhile, Panama’s hopes of advancing were officially extinguished as Los Canaleros remained without a point in their second World Cup appearance.

Croatia nearly doubled its advantage moments after taking the lead. Veteran captain Luka Modrić, making his landmark 200th international appearance, showcased his enduring class with a pinpoint through ball that sent Marco Pašalić in on goal. However, Panama goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera came up with a vital save, denying Pašalić on the breakaway and keeping his side within striking distance.

Panama refused to go quietly and produced its best spell of the match midway through the second half. In the 67th minute, the Central American side launched a relentless assault on the Croatian goal, creating three consecutive opportunities to equalize. Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livaković rose to the occasion with a remarkable sequence of saves, culminating in a spectacular fingertip stop that pushed the ball over the crossbar and preserved his team’s slim advantage.

The match was largely defined by Croatia’s patience and defensive discipline against a determined Panamanian side that defended resolutely for much of the contest. Despite Panama’s organization at the back, Budimir’s clinical finish proved to be the difference in a game where scoring chances were at a premium.

For Croatia, the result provides a lifeline after a difficult start to the tournament. The 2018 World Cup runners-up now head into a decisive Group L showdown against Ghana in Philadelphia on Saturday. A victory could propel Zlatko Dalić’s squad into the knockout rounds, depending on other results.

The group remains finely balanced. England and Ghana sit atop Group L with four points each following their scoreless draw earlier on Tuesday, while Croatia trails with three points. Panama, eliminated from contention, will conclude its tournament against England in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

With qualification still within reach, Croatia’s fate remains in its own hands heading into a dramatic final day of Group L action. Budimir’s timely contribution and Livaković’s heroics have ensured the Vatreni remain firmly in the hunt for a place in the World Cup round of 32.
