Nashville Airport Could Be Renamed After Dolly Parton
Nashville International Airport could soon carry the name of one of Tennessee’s most famous residents. Airport officials have voted to begin the process of renaming the airport in honor of Dolly Parton, creating a lasting tribute to the country music icon and philanthropist.
A New Name For A Nashville Landmark
The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority voted unanimously to move forward with the renaming effort. The proposal follows a major push to honor Parton and recognize the enormous impact she has had on Tennessee, Nashville and the country music industry. The exact name has not yet been finalized. Nashville officials previously supported the name “Dolly Parton International Airport,” but the airport authority is responsible for making the final decision on the airport’s official name.
Dolly Parton’s Connection To Tennessee
Parton has been closely connected to Tennessee throughout her career. Born in Sevier County, she became one of the most successful country music performers in history after moving to Nashville and launching her career as a songwriter and performer. Her influence eventually expanded far beyond music. Parton became a major businesswoman, entertainer and philanthropist, while her Dollywood theme park helped make the Smoky Mountains one of Tennessee’s most recognizable tourism destinations. Her Imagination Library has also distributed millions of free books to children, making literacy and childhood education a major part of her philanthropic legacy.
The Airport Could Become A Permanent Tribute
Nashville International Airport is one of the most important transportation hubs in Tennessee and serves millions of passengers. Supporters of the renaming argue that the airport is an especially fitting location because it welcomes visitors from across the United States and around the world. A name honoring Parton would also connect Nashville’s international image with the person who helped make the city synonymous with country music.
BNA Is Expected To Stay
Even if the airport receives a new name, travelers are expected to continue seeing the familiar BNA airport code. The code has historical ties to Berry Field, the airport’s longtime name and military connection. That means passengers could eventually see Dolly Parton’s name throughout the airport while still booking flights using BNA.
A Legacy Beyond Music
Parton’s potential airport tribute reflects how much her influence extends beyond her songs. She became an important figure in Tennessee tourism, business, entertainment and philanthropy. The renaming process is still underway, so the final name and timeline for new signs and branding have not been determined. If approved, however, Nashville could soon have an airport that permanently carries the name of one of Tennessee’s most recognizable cultural figures.
