New York Basketball Coach Seen On Video Pulling Player’s Ponytail

Investigation Underway After NY Basketball Coach Seen Pulling Player’s Ponytail

An investigation is underway after a disturbing incident at a girls’ high school basketball game in upstate New York, where a coach was seen yanking a player’s ponytail. The shocking moment was caught on video, which quickly spread across social media, prompting widespread concern and outrage.

The incident occurred following the Class D state championship game on March 21, 2025, at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, New York. The Northville High School girls’ varsity basketball team had just suffered a 43-37 defeat to LaFargeville. The video shows Hailey Monroe, a senior player, visibly upset after fouling out during the game. As the teams lined up for the postgame ceremony, Coach Jim Zullo of Northville High School approached Monroe and abruptly pulled her ponytail, causing her head to jerk backward.

The footage, which captured the unsettling interaction, has been widely circulated online, drawing criticism for the coach’s behavior. In the video, a teammate intervenes quickly, stepping in to prevent the situation from escalating.

The Northville Central School District responded to the incident, issuing a statement condemning Zullo’s actions as “completely unacceptable.” The district also confirmed that Zullo had been immediately dismissed from his position as head coach. “We take the well-being of our students very seriously and expect all individuals involved in our programs to treat others with respect and integrity,” the statement read.

Zullo, who had a long and respected coaching career, including leading Shenendehowa High School to a state title in 1987, issued an apology for his actions. He expressed regret for his behavior, acknowledging that his actions were inappropriate and not in line with his usual conduct. “I deeply apologize to Hailey, her family, and the Northville community. What happened was a mistake, and I regret it deeply,” Zullo said in a statement.

In response to the incident, the Hudson Valley Community College Department of Public Safety is conducting an investigation. The coach has been issued an appearance ticket for second-degree harassment and is scheduled to appear in Troy City Court.

The incident has sparked wider conversations about boundaries and professionalism in coach-athlete relationships, especially in high school sports. The Northville Central School District has assured the public that it is providing support to the affected players and families, underlining its commitment to ensuring that all students feel safe and respected.

The investigation is ongoing, and further updates are expected as authorities look into the details of the incident.
