NFL Suspends Officials Jeff Seeman, Adrian Hill for Conduct Toward Players

NFL Hands Down Suspension on NFL Officials

The NFL has suspended line judge Jeff Seeman for two games and referee Adrian Hill for one game following separate incidents involving what the league deemed unprofessional conduct toward players. NFL Vice President of Officiating Ramon George issued the suspensions as the league continues to emphasize accountability for both players and game officials.

Jeff Seeman Suspended Two Games After Incident With Trey McBride

Seeman received a two-game suspension after an incident involving Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride during Sunday’s 36-24 loss to the New York Giants. The incident occurred after McBride believed he had been interfered with by Giants cornerback Dru Phillips on a third-and-8 pass from quarterback Jacoby Brissett. The pass fell incomplete, but McBride was hit on the play and immediately complained to Seeman.

Video of the incident appeared to show Seeman yelling a profanity at McBride during the exchange. The league’s decision came after the incident drew attention from the NFL Players Association. NFLPA executive director JC Tretter posted a statement on X calling for officials to receive the same level of scrutiny as players when it comes to their conduct on the field. Seeman’s two-game suspension is the longer of the two penalties handed down by the league.

Adrian Hill Suspended One Game After Vikings Dolphins Incident

Hill was suspended for one game following an incident involving Minnesota Vikings linebacker Eric Wilson during Minnesota’s 15-10 victory over the Miami Dolphins. The incident occurred midway through the first quarter after a third-and-10 play had been whistled dead because of a Minnesota penalty.

Dolphins running back Ollie Gordon II pushed Wilson away from quarterback Malik Willis and into Hill, knocking the referee to the ground. As Wilson attempted to help Hill up, Hill quickly got to his feet and pointed at Wilson while yelling at him to get away.

Wilson later said he laughed off the exchange, indicating that he did not believe the incident was a major issue. Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell said he did not have a great view of the play but defended Hill’s overall reputation as an NFL official.

NFL Sends Message on Officials’ Conduct

The suspensions represent a significant reminder that NFL officials are also subject to discipline when their conduct falls short of league expectations. Players are routinely fined or suspended for inappropriate behavior toward opponents or officials, and the NFL’s decisions involving Seeman and Hill reinforce the league’s expectation that officials maintain professionalism during heated moments.

The incidents also highlight the difficult environment officials operate in, particularly when emotions run high and players immediately react to disputed calls. However, the league’s actions make clear that officials are expected to maintain their composure and professionalism when interacting with players.

With Seeman suspended for two games and Hill sidelined for one, the NFL has taken disciplinary action against both officials and signaled that conduct toward players will be subject to the same type of scrutiny that players face for their behavior on the field.
