Miami’s late-season surge kept rolling Saturday afternoon as quarterback Carson Beck turned in his sharpest performance of the year, throwing for 320 yards and four touchdowns to lift No. 14 Miami to a 34–17 victory over Virginia Tech at Lane Stadium.
The Hurricanes (9–2, 5–2 ACC, No. 13 CFP) extended their winning streak to three games — each by at least 17 points — and stayed firmly in the hunt for a spot in the ACC Championship Game. Beck, nearly flawless from the opening snap, completed his first 11 passes and finished 27 of 32, guiding an offense that scored on all four first-half possessions and never trailed.
Beck spread the ball around, but his top target was true freshman sensation Malachi Toney, who delivered the best performance of his young career. Toney recorded career highs with 12 receptions for 146 yards and added a late touchdown, strengthening his growing case for ACC Rookie of the Year.
Miami wasted no time establishing control. Beck fired a 20-yard touchdown to tight end Elija Lofton and later hit Mark Fletcher on a 3-yard score. With two Carter Davis field goals sprinkled in, the Hurricanes built a commanding 20–3 halftime lead while rolling up yards and consuming clock.
Virginia Tech (3–8, 2–5) briefly rekindled life to start the third quarter. Jeffrey Overton broke free for a 38-yard touchdown run on the opening drive of the half, trimming the deficit to 20–10 and energizing the home crowd.
But Miami answered with championship-level composure. Nearly seven minutes later, Beck found Girard Pringle Jr. on a 16-yard touchdown strike, pushing the margin back to 17 and extinguishing Virginia Tech’s momentum.
The Hokies, who entered the game relying heavily on their ground attack, did find success against Miami’s top-ranked rushing defense (81.8 ypg). Marcellous Hawkins led the effort with 72 rushing yards on eight carries, and Virginia Tech finished with an impressive 194 yards on the ground. Still, it wasn’t enough to keep pace with a Miami offense that totaled 418 yards and controlled the game throughout.
Holding a 27–17 lead with 26 seconds remaining, Miami faced a fourth-and-2 at the Virginia Tech 19. Rather than kick a chip-shot field goal or try to bleed out the clock with a run, Cristobal elected to throw. Beck delivered a 20-yard strike to Toney for Miami’s final touchdown. The call raised eyebrows, but Cristobal stood firmly behind it post game interview.
Toney’s touchdown capped his third 100-yard receiving game of the season. His year-long totals — 59 catches, 698 yards and five touchdowns — have him squarely in the conversation for one of the conference’s top postseason honors.
Virginia Tech’s struggles continued. The loss marked their third straight and fifth in their last six as the program transitions toward a new era. James Franklin, introduced Wednesday as the Hokies’ next head coach, will take over following the dismissal of Brent Pry on Sept. 14. Saturday’s game served as another reminder of the rebuilding task ahead.
Miami travels to Pittsburgh next Saturday as it continues to push for an ACC Championship berth — and perhaps a path into the College Football Playoff.
Virginia Tech closes its season on the road as well, heading to Charlottesville to face archrival Virginia.
Miami’s rise continues, and with Beck dealing and Toney emerging as one of the nation’s top freshmen, the Hurricanes are surging at exactly the right time.
