No. 2 Georgia Visits No. 6 Alabama in Massive Week 6 SEC Showdown Saturday Night

Bulldogs and Crimson Tide Meet in Top-10 Battle

The stakes could hardly be higher when No. 2 Georgia visits No. 6 Alabama on Saturday night in a marquee Week 6 SEC matchup between two of the nation’s top ranked teams.

The Bulldogs and Crimson Tide will meet Oct. 10 at 7:30 p.m. EDT, with the game set to air nationally on ABC. Georgia enters the showdown after a convincing 38-14 victory over Vanderbilt on Oct. 3, while Alabama rolled past Mississippi State 56-23 to set up one of the biggest games of the early college football season.

Georgia has been particularly effective at sustaining drives, ranking sixth nationally in third-down conversion percentage at 54.9%. The Bulldogs also have protected the football, ranking ninth in the FBS with a plus-6 turnover margin. Alabama has been even better in that category, ranking sixth nationally at plus-7.

The Crimson Tide, however, have a vulnerability Georgia could look to exploit. Alabama ranks 116th in the FBS in red-zone defense, allowing opponents to score on 92.9% of their trips inside the 20-yard line. Georgia’s red-zone offense ranks 51st nationally, converting 89.3% of its opportunities into points.

Georgia’s Stockton Leads Efficient Offense

Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton has been one of the Bulldogs’ most efficient offensive players this season. Stockton has completed 75.5% of his passes for 1,049 yards and 13 touchdowns while throwing just one interception.

He enters the Alabama game after another strong performance against Vanderbilt, completing 25 of 32 passes for 295 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. Stockton also rushed seven times for 22 yards in the victory.

Nate Frazier leads Georgia’s rushing attack with 211 yards on 26 carries and five touchdowns. Craig Dandridge has emerged as the Bulldogs’ leading receiver, producing 177 yards on nine catches with one touchdown.

Georgia also has demonstrated an ability to control the game with sustained possessions. The Bulldogs average 30:04 in time of possession, which ranks 72nd nationally. While that figure is not elite by FBS standards, it could become important against an Alabama offense that averages 33:39 per game, 13th-best in the country.

Alabama Brings Explosive Passing Attack

Alabama enters the matchup with plenty of offensive firepower of its own, led by quarterback Keelon Russell. Russell has thrown for 1,414 yards and 11 touchdowns while completing 71.2% of his passes. He has been intercepted just twice.

Russell was sharp in Alabama’s 56-23 victory over Mississippi State, completing 16 of 22 passes for 285 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. He also added 16 rushing yards and a touchdown on five carries.

Daniel Hill leads the Crimson Tide on the ground with 247 yards and four touchdowns on 51 carries, while Ryan Williams has been the team’s biggest receiving threat. Williams has 20 receptions for 376 yards and four touchdowns, giving Alabama a dangerous weapon capable of changing the game with one play.

Alabama also received a big contribution from Lotzeir Brooks against Mississippi State, as he finished with 96 yards on four receptions. Trae’shawn Brown added 66 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries, along with two receptions for 12 yards.

Turnovers Could Decide a Top-10 Battle

With both teams among the nation’s leaders in turnover margin, protecting the football could be one of the defining factors Saturday night. Georgia’s plus-6 margin and Alabama’s plus-7 mark demonstrate that both defenses have consistently created extra possessions while their offenses have largely avoided costly mistakes.

In a matchup where the talent level is relatively even, a short field created by a turnover could swing the game. Georgia’s third-down efficiency also gives the Bulldogs a path to control the tempo. If Stockton and the Bulldogs can consistently convert third downs, extend drives and keep Alabama’s explosive offense on the sideline, Georgia could dictate the pace.

Alabama, meanwhile, will look to use its passing game and superior time-of-possession numbers to put pressure on Georgia’s defense. The Crimson Tide’s ability to finish drives could be especially important against a Georgia defense that will be looking to force Alabama into long-yardage situations.

What to Watch Saturday Night

This matchup features two teams with legitimate championship aspirations, making every possession especially important. Georgia’s efficiency on third down and Alabama’s ability to protect the football and generate turnovers are among the biggest statistical storylines entering the game.

The Bulldogs will also have an opportunity to attack Alabama’s vulnerable red-zone defense, while the Crimson Tide will rely on Russell, Williams and a balanced rushing attack to keep Georgia from controlling the game.

With two top six teams meeting under the lights in Tuscaloosa, the Week 6 showdown has all the ingredients of an SEC classic. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. EDT on Saturday, Oct. 10, with ABC carrying the game.
