Beebe Jr. Powers Hoosiers Past Wildcats in Big Ten Thriller

No. 4 Indiana survived a major scare Friday night, relying on a breakout performance from running back Lee Beebe Jr. to defeat Northwestern 29-23 and extend its remarkable winning streak. With starting running back Turbo Richard sidelined by a lower right leg injury, Beebe seized his opportunity and delivered the biggest performance of his Indiana career.

He carried 24 times for 203 yards and a touchdown, including a 70-yard run late in the fourth quarter that set up Josh Hoover’s game-sealing 1-yard touchdown with 1:56 remaining. The victory kept the Hoosiers unbeaten at 4-0 overall and 1-0 in Big Ten play while extending the Football Bowl Subdivision’s longest active winning streak to 20 games. Indiana also won its 19th consecutive home game, although Northwestern pushed the defending national champions to the brink.

Lee Beebe Jr. Delivers When Indiana Needs Him Most

Beebe had been waiting for an opportunity like this for an entire year, and he made the most of it against the Wildcats. After Richard left the game in the first half, Beebe became the centerpiece of Indiana’s offense. He produced his second 100-yard game of the season and repeatedly came up with explosive plays when the Hoosiers needed them most.

His biggest sequence came after Northwestern pulled within 22-20. Beebe broke free for a 70-yard run to the Wildcats’ 5-yard line, putting Indiana in position to regain control. Six plays later, Hoover powered into the end zone from 1 yard out to push the lead back to 29-20.

Earlier in the fourth quarter, Beebe had also ripped off a 39-yard run following a Northwestern facemask penalty that extended an Indiana drive. He eventually finished that possession with a 4-yard touchdown run with 9:39 remaining. His performance earned high praise from Indiana coach Curt Cignetti as the Hoosiers leaned heavily on the junior running back in a game that became much closer than expected.

Northwestern Pushes Defending Champions to the Limit

Indiana looked dominant early, but Northwestern completely changed the complexion of the game after halftime. The Wildcats were held to just 51 total yards in the first half, including minus-5 rushing yards, as Indiana’s defense appeared to be in complete control. Northwestern’s offense struggled immediately when quarterback Aidan Chiles fumbled a snap on the Wildcats’ first offensive play, with Rolijah Hardy recovering the play for a safety in the end zone.

Indiana extended its lead to 5-0 on Nico Radicic’s 43-yard field goal early in the second quarter before Hoover connected with Nick Marsh for an 8-yard touchdown with 5:04 remaining in the first half. But Northwestern refused to go away. Chiles finished 22-of-29 passing for 293 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for a score.

He repeatedly found ways to move the Wildcats downfield in the second half and helped Northwestern turn a 12-0 deficit into a one-score game. Northwestern cut Indiana’s lead to 15-13 early in the fourth quarter and had two opportunities to tie the game. The Wildcats were given another chance after a pass-interference penalty on their first two-point attempt, but Indiana stopped Chiles on a designed run to preserve its advantage.

Indiana Makes Just Enough Plays to Escape

Hoover finished the night 19-of-29 for 201 yards and a touchdown while Charlie Becker led Indiana with seven receptions for 98 yards. The Hoosiers ultimately needed their running game to close out the victory, and Beebe provided the difference.

After Hoover’s touchdown put Indiana ahead 29-20, Northwestern continued to fight. Jackson Kleather connected on a 42-yard field goal with 58 seconds remaining to make it 29-23, but the Wildcats could not recover the ensuing onside kick. That allowed Indiana to run out the clock and escape with the victory.

Northwestern dropped to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in Big Ten play. The Wildcats came just short of defeating a defending national champion for the first time since 1971 and a top-five opponent for the first time since 1959.

What’s Next for Indiana and Northwestern

Northwestern will face another major challenge next Saturday when it hosts No. 13 Penn State in another Big Ten matchup. Indiana, meanwhile, will hit the road for the first time this season when the Hoosiers visit winless Rutgers next Saturday. After extending their winning streak to 20 games, the defending national champions will look to avoid another close call as they continue their Big Ten title defense.
