Hurricanes Cruise to 5-0 Start
No. 4 Miami continued its unbeaten start to the season in emphatic fashion Saturday night, routing Clemson 41-13 at Memorial Stadium to take sole possession of first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Miami quarterback Darian Mensah threw for 227 yards and a touchdown while adding a 34 yard rushing score, and running back Mark Fletcher Jr. rushed for 77 yards and two touchdowns as the Hurricanes improved to 5-0 for the second consecutive season.
Cooper Barkate also delivered a big performance with five catches for 98 yards, including a 66 yard touchdown reception that helped Miami establish control early. Mensah entered the game already generating Heisman Trophy buzz after throwing 15 touchdown passes through his first five games. He added another passing touchdown Saturday and extended his streak of consecutive games with a touchdown pass to 23, dating to his time at Duke, where he led the Blue Devils to the ACC championship last season.
After the game, Mensah said he was pleased with the “huge win” on the road in a difficult environment but acknowledged that Miami still had plenty to clean up, particularly its miscues. One of those mistakes erased a long touchdown pass to Malachi Toney because of an illegal shift.
Miami Jumps Ahead Early
There was plenty of energy inside Memorial Stadium before the primetime kickoff, but Clemson’s offense immediately struggled to capitalize as the Tigers went three-and-out on their opening possession. Miami needed just two plays to strike. Mensah quickly found Barkate on a tunnel screen, and Barkate broke through two defenders before racing 66 yards to the end zone for a 7-0 Hurricanes lead.
The touchdown continued Mensah’s remarkable streak and gave Miami an early advantage against a Clemson team that entered the game as a 17½-point home underdog, the largest point spread against the Tigers during Dabo Swinney’s tenure. Mensah later extended Miami’s lead to 17-3 with his 34-yard touchdown run. The play included a wild finish, as Mensah fumbled just before reaching the goal line but recovered the ball in the end zone for the score.
Miami’s offense, which entered the game ranked No. 1 nationally, appeared poised for a runaway victory. Clemson’s defense, however, managed to keep the Tigers within striking distance by forcing two Miami punts and a turnover on downs.
Clemson’s Offense Struggles Under Pressure
Freshman quarterback Tait Reynolds finished with a career high 295 passing yards on 29-of-44 passing, but he spent much of the night under heavy pressure from Miami’s defense. Reynolds was sacked six times and threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown.
Five of those sacks came in the first half alone as Miami’s defense repeatedly disrupted Clemson’s offense. The Tigers also struggled to finish drives, failing to find the end zone until the fourth quarter. Miami entered the matchup with the nation’s No. 2-ranked defense and consistently made it difficult for Clemson to establish any offensive rhythm.
Hurricanes Put the Game Away on the Ground
Miami increasingly relied on its running game in the second half, wearing down Clemson’s defense and controlling the line of scrimmage. Fletcher capped a touchdown drive late in the third quarter with a 2-yard touchdown run, extending Miami’s lead to 24-6. Clemson finally reached the end zone with 12 minutes remaining when Gideon Davidson scored on a 2-yard run, cutting into the deficit.
The Hurricanes immediately answered. Miami put together a nine play scoring drive, and every play came on the ground. Fletcher finished the possession by vaulting into the end zone for his second touchdown of the night, effectively putting the game out of reach.
Miami finished with a commanding 192-55 advantage in rushing yards, allowing the Hurricanes to control the game late and pull away from the Tigers. The loss was Clemson’s fourth-worst under Swinney and leaves the Tigers with plenty to address during their upcoming open week.
What’s Next for Miami and Clemson
Both teams will be off next weekend before returning to action Oct. 17. Clemson will return home to face Charleston Southern, while Miami will host Florida State in its next game. For the Hurricanes, the victory over Clemson further strengthened their position atop the ACC while keeping their perfect record intact.
