Oilers End Two Game Losing Streak
The Edmonton Oilers snapped a two game losing streak in impressive fashion Wednesday night, shutting out the Calgary Flames 4-0 behind a strong performance from goaltender Tristan Jarry and another multi-point effort from superstar Connor McDavid.
Jarry stopped all 24 shots he faced to record the shutout, while McDavid continued his remarkable start to the season with two more points. Mathieu Joseph, Mattias Ekholm, Kasperi Kapanen and Alex Formenton each scored to help Edmonton improve to 9-2-2 and maintain its position among the NHL’s top teams. The loss ended Calgary’s four game winning streak and dropped the Flames to 5-7-0.
McDavid Makes NHL History With Assist Streak
McDavid continued to rewrite the record books, extending his season-opening points streak to 13 games and increasing his NHL-leading total to 36 points. The Edmonton captain also extended his streak of recording at least one assist in every game this season to 13 contests, establishing an NHL record for the longest assist streak to begin a campaign.
He surpassed the previous marks associated with Sebastian Aho, Ken Linseman and Wayne Gretzky. McDavid’s continued production has been a driving force behind Edmonton’s strong start, and his latest performance helped the Oilers get back on track after consecutive defeats.
Jarry Delivers Shutout as Oilers Control the Game
Jarry provided a steady presence in goal, turning aside all 24 Calgary shots to secure the shutout and give Edmonton a much-needed defensive boost. The Oilers received balanced scoring from Joseph, Ekholm, Kapanen and Formenton, with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins also contributing assists as Edmonton put together a complete performance at both ends of the ice. Calgary, meanwhile, struggled to generate enough offense to solve Jarry and get back into the game.
Flames Lose Cooley to Injury
The Flames also faced an injury setback in goal. Devin Cooley made eight saves before leaving the game late in the first period after being run over in the crease by forward Colton Dach. Dustin Wolf replaced Cooley and stopped 20 shots the rest of the way, but the Edmonton offense proved too much for Calgary to overcome. The shutout was a disappointing end to the Flames’ four-game winning streak, as they were unable to build on their recent momentum against their provincial rivals.
Up Coming NHL Games for Oilers and Flames
The Flames will look to bounce back when they host the Seattle Kraken on Friday night. Calgary will aim to regroup offensively and get back into the win column after being held scoreless by Edmonton. The Oilers will continue their road trip Saturday night against the New York Islanders, looking to build on Wednesday’s shutout victory and extend their strong start to the season. With Jarry delivering a shutout and McDavid continuing his historic scoring pace, Edmonton has plenty of reasons to feel confident heading into its next matchup.
