Oklahoma Pediatrician Accused of Murdering 4-Year-Old Daughter Appears Before Miami-Dade Judge

Doctor Accused of Murdering 4-Year-Old Daughter

A pediatrician from Oklahoma, accused of murdering her 4-year-old daughter and attempting to cover it up as a drowning, has been extradited to South Florida and is now in custody at the Miami-Dade County jail, according to authorities.

Dr. Neha Gupta, 36, was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center late Wednesday night, following her arrest in Edmond, Oklahoma earlier this month. Gupta is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her daughter, Aria Talathi, whose body was found floating in a backyard pool at a short-term rental home in El Portal on June 27.

Miami-Dade police allege that Gupta deliberately killed her child and staged the death to appear as an accidental drowning. The incident initially appeared to be a tragic accident until autopsy results and a subsequent investigation revealed significant inconsistencies and disturbing forensic findings.

Discovery and 911 Call

On the morning of June 27, Gupta called 911 around 3:40 a.m., reporting that she had found her daughter unresponsive in the pool behind the Airbnb they were staying in. Emergency responders arrived and attempted life-saving measures, but Aria was pronounced dead shortly after being transported to Jackson North Medical Center.

Autopsy Contradicts Drowning Claim

The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office later determined that the child’s death was not consistent with drowning. The autopsy revealed:

  • No water in the lungs or stomach, eliminating accidental drowning as the cause of death

  • Bruising on Aria’s face and inside her mouth, suggesting asphyxiation or smothering

  • No signs of recent food intake, contradicting Gupta’s statement that the child had eaten shortly before bed

Based on these findings, the medical examiner ruled the death a homicide by asphyxiation.

Custody Battle and Alleged Motive

Investigators also uncovered a contentious custody battle between Gupta and the child’s father, Dr. Saurabh Talathi, who had shared legal rights over Aria. Talathi told authorities he had not given permission for Gupta to take their daughter to Florida and was unaware of the trip. Authorities believe the custody dispute may have been a contributing factor in the alleged motive.

According to police reports, Gupta arrived in South Florida with Aria on June 25, checking into a vacation rental in El Portal. She claimed to have taken her daughter to the beach and out for dinner before the fatal night. However, key details in her timeline did not align with evidence collected by investigators, including surveillance footage, forensic testing, and the autopsy findings.

Arrest and Extradition

On July 10, a warrant was issued for Gupta’s arrest, and she was taken into custody in Oklahoma with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Service. She waived extradition and was transferred to Miami-Dade County on July 17, where she now faces prosecution for the murder of her daughter.

She made her first court appearance on July 18, where a Miami-Dade judge determined that the charge qualifies as a non-bondable offense under Florida law, meaning Gupta will remain in jail pending her next hearing. Her arraignment is scheduled for August 7.

Legal Defense and Next Steps

Gupta’s legal team maintains that she is innocent, calling the death a tragic accident. Her attorneys have requested an independent autopsy and have stated that Gupta is “devastated” by her daughter’s death. They have also challenged the conclusions of the medical examiner, claiming the evidence is being misinterpreted.

The Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office is preparing to present additional forensic evidence, and the case is expected to draw significant public and legal scrutiny. Prosecutors have not yet announced whether they will seek enhanced penalties, including the death penalty, but such considerations may come after the arraignment.

A Shocking Case with National Attention

This tragic case — involving a highly educated mother, an innocent child, and a potential cover-up — has attracted nationwide attention. The quiet residential neighborhood of El Portal, where the alleged crime took place, remains shaken by the incident.

As the case develops, authorities continue to review digital evidence, forensic data, and Gupta’s travel history. With court proceedings now underway in South Florida, the legal system will determine whether Gupta’s actions were the result of a calculated crime or a misunderstood tragedy.
