Over 30 People Rescued from Sinking Yacht off Miami Beach

30 People Rescued From Sinking Yacht

More than 30 people were dramatically rescued from a luxury yacht that began sinking off the coast of Miami Beach on Sunday afternoon, prompting an urgent response from local emergency services and the U.S. Coast Guard.

According to authorities, the vessel began taking on water around 3:45 p.m. approximately two miles offshore. Witnesses reported seeing the yacht, described as a multi-million-dollar vessel spanning over 80 feet, listing to one side before partially submerging.

Emergency calls quickly flooded into 911 dispatchers, prompting a coordinated rescue effort involving Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, the Coast Guard, and several nearby private boaters. Video footage captured from the scene showed passengers in life vests being pulled from the water as the yacht continued to sink.

“Thanks to the swift action of our responders and the help of good Samaritans, all individuals on board were safely accounted for,” said Coast Guard Petty Officer Maria Hernandez in a statement. “There were no serious injuries reported, though several people were treated for mild hypothermia and shock.”

The exact number of passengers on board was not immediately confirmed, but authorities stated that over 30 people were rescued. The yacht was reportedly chartered for a private event earlier in the day.

As of Monday morning, the vessel remained partially submerged, and efforts were underway to stabilize and tow it to shore. The Coast Guard has launched a full investigation to determine what caused the yacht to take on water so rapidly. Early speculation ranges from mechanical failure to possible hull damage, though no official cause has been identified.

The name of the yacht and the charter company operating it have not yet been released. Authorities confirmed that the vessel was operating with the proper permits, and all required safety equipment appeared to be on board.

This incident raises renewed questions about yacht safety and overcrowding, particularly during the busy spring boating season along Florida’s coast.

Officials are urging all boaters to review safety protocols and ensure vessels are not exceeding capacity.

“We’re fortunate this didn’t end in tragedy,” said Hernandez. “It’s a reminder of how quickly things can change at sea.”

The Coast Guard is asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant video footage to contact them as part of their ongoing investigation.
