Love Throws Three Touchdowns as Packers Defense Delivers Six Sacks
The Green Bay Packers overcame three turnovers and a late comeback attempt by the Carolina Panthers to secure a 27-19 victory on Thursday Night Football in Week 8. Quarterback Jordan Love threw three touchdown passes, Josh Jacobs scored twice, and Green Bay’s defense recorded six sacks to help the Packers hold on for the win.
Love completed 30 of 41 passes for 288 yards and three touchdowns, connecting with Tucker Kraft, rookie Matthew Golden and Jacobs. He also threw an interception as Green Bay improved to 5-3 and extended its defensive dominance, having held each of its last five opponents to 20 points or fewer.
Jacobs managed just 39 yards on 21 carries against a Carolina defense ranked last in the NFL against the run, but he made his contributions count. He scored on a 1-yard rushing touchdown and a 4-yard reception, helping Green Bay build a lead that proved just large enough to withstand the Panthers’ late push.
Carolina fell to 3-4 despite a determined fourth-quarter rally that brought the Panthers within one score. Quarterback Bryce Young threw for 209 yards and a touchdown, but Green Bay’s pass rush and timely defensive stops ultimately prevented the comeback.
Packers Overcome Early Mistakes to Take Control
Green Bay got off to a rough start when it fumbled the opening kickoff, giving Carolina an early scoring opportunity. The Packers also went three-and-out on their first offensive possession, but they regrouped and scored touchdowns on three of their next four drives to take command.
Love connected with Kraft for a 12-yard touchdown pass over the middle on third-and-8 to give Green Bay a 6-3 lead. The extra-point attempt by struggling rookie Trey Smack bounced off the left upright, leaving the Packers with a three-point advantage.
Carolina responded before Christian Watson helped swing the momentum. Watson hauled in a 53-yard reception that set up Jacobs’ 1-yard touchdown run, giving Green Bay a 13-10 lead early in the second quarter. The Packers never surrendered that advantage.
Rookie receiver Matthew Golden added another touchdown when he caught a 24-yard pass in the left corner of the end zone on third-and-13. The score came one play after Golden had dropped a potential touchdown reception and extended Green Bay’s lead to 20-10.
The Packers carried that momentum into the second half. Carolina received the opening kickoff but failed to capitalize when defensive linemen Chris McClellan and Evan Williams stopped running back Chuba Hubbard a yard short of the first-down marker on fourth-and-2 near midfield.
Green Bay took advantage of the stop on its ensuing possession. Love found Jacobs for a touchdown reception, pushing the Packers’ lead to 27-10 and putting Carolina in a difficult position.
Carolina Makes a Late Push, but Green Bay Holds On
The Panthers began to find life late in the game after Green Bay squandered an opportunity to extend its advantage. Leading 27-13 early in the fourth quarter, the Packers had the ball at Carolina’s 28-yard line when Love threw an interception to Zakee Wheatley in the end zone.
The turnover gave the Panthers an opportunity to mount a comeback, and they capitalized on the momentum shift. After trailing 27-10 in the third quarter, Carolina trimmed the deficit to 27-19 on Young’s 26-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Coker on fourth and 3 with 5:37 remaining. However, Young’s ensuing two-point conversion attempt fell incomplete, leaving the Panthers eight points behind.
Carolina got another opportunity when it regained possession at its own 45-yard line, but the Packers’ defense forced a turnover on downs at midfield with 2:41 remaining. The Panthers received one final chance at their own 20-yard line with 22 seconds left and no timeouts. However, Dani Dennis-Sutton sacked Young, effectively ending Carolina’s comeback hopes and sealing Green Bay’s victory.
Young finished 23 of 41 for 209 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Hubbard led the Panthers’ ground attack with 81 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. He also contributed seven receptions for 38 yards. Green Bay’s ability to pressure Young proved decisive. The six sacks disrupted Carolina’s offensive rhythm and helped the Packers preserve their lead despite the three turnovers.
Christian Watson Returns After Hospital Visit
Watson provided one of the game’s biggest offensive plays before a frightening injury scare temporarily took him out of the action. The Packers receiver was taken to the hospital after suffering a chest injury while making his 53-yard catch in the second quarter. Carolina cornerback Will Lee was also injured on the play, hurting his hamstring while diving to make a tackle and requiring a cart to leave for the locker room.
Watson later received clearance to return after a CT scan showed no internal bleeding. However, he said he had broken a rib on the play. His return was an encouraging development for Green Bay, although the reported broken rib could remain a concern moving forward.
The injury also added to Carolina’s problems in the secondary. The Panthers already had three cornerbacks on injured reserve: Akayleb Evans, who has dealt with triceps and knee injuries; Mike Jackson, who is sidelined with a groin injury; and Jaycee Horn, who has a quadriceps injury.
Brewers Celebrate Historic World Series Championship at Lambeau Field
The evening also provided a memorable celebration for Milwaukee sports fans as several members of the Milwaukee Brewers received a massive ovation at Lambeau Field, one night after winning the first World Series championship in franchise history.
Brewers team captain Christian Yelich and Cy Young Award favorite Jacob Misiorowski were among the players welcomed by Packers fans. Pitcher Brandon Woodruff held the Commissioner’s Trophy aloft as he emerged from the tunnel during a timeout before the second quarter. Several Brewers players attempted the famous Lambeau Leap into the stands, with outfielder Sal Frelick enjoying the most success.
The players later appeared on the stadium’s video board wearing cheeseheads bearing the message “2026 WS Champions” as they cheered on the Packers. The celebration brought together Milwaukee’s football and baseball fan bases during a special week for the city, with the Brewers’ historic title providing an added reason to celebrate at Lambeau Field.
Up Coming Games for the Packers and Panthers
The victory improved Green Bay’s record to 5-3 as the Packers continue to rely on their defense and Love’s ability to generate points through the air. Holding five consecutive opponents to 20 points or fewer is an encouraging sign as the team moves deeper into the season. The Packers will look to carry their momentum into their next game against the New England Patriots on Nov. 8.
Carolina, meanwhile, will attempt to regroup after letting a comeback opportunity slip away. The Panthers showed resilience by cutting the deficit to one score, but their inability to convert crucial fourth downs and finish the final drive proved costly. Carolina will return home to host the Denver Broncos on Nov. 8 as it looks to get back on track.
