The Florida Panthers continued their dominant run with a 4-0 shutout victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night, marking their sixth consecutive win. Newly acquired goaltender Vitek Vanecek delivered a stellar performance in his Florida debut, stopping all 21 shots he faced for his first shutout of the season and 10th of his career.
A.J. Greer, Carter Verhaeghe, Anton Lundell, and Sam Bennett each scored for the Panthers, showcasing the team’s offensive depth. Captain Aleksander Barkov contributed an assist, adding to his red-hot form with six points in his past two games. Defenseman Nate Schmidt also played a key role with two assists.
Vanecek’s strong outing capped an impressive defensive effort by the Panthers, who have outscored opponents 20-5 during their current winning streak. Florida’s penalty kill remained perfect during this stretch, successfully killing off 19 consecutive penalties.
With under three minutes remaining in the second period, Lundell extended Florida’s lead to 3-0 by converting a rebound off Schmidt’s shot. The goal marked Lundell’s 15th of the season and solidified the Panthers control heading into the final period.
Aaron Ekblad’s assist on Verhaeghe’s goal extended his assist streak to six games, tying the franchise record for a Panthers defenseman. He joins Brandon Montour (2022-23), MacKenzie Weegar (2020-21), Jay Bouwmeester (2005-06), and Robert Svehla (1995-96) in achieving that milestone.
The Sabres, despite entering the game with the NHL’s 11th-ranked offense (3.18 goals per game), struggled to generate chances. Buffalo has now been outscored 28-14 during its six-game losing streak. Goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 32 saves but received little offensive support.
The Sabres will look to snap their skid when they host the Edmonton Oilers on Monday. Meanwhile, the Panthers hit the road to face the Boston Bruins on Tuesday to kick off a six-game road trip.
