Panthers Dominate Sharks 7-2 Behind Ekblad’s Return and Explosive Second Period

The Florida Panthers delivered a commanding performance on Saturday night, routing the San Jose Sharks 7-2 at SAP Center. Defenseman Aaron Ekblad, returning from an upper-body injury that sidelined him for eight of the last nine games, shined with a goal and an assist, while Matthew Tkachuk added a stellar showing with a goal and two assists.

The Panthers (now 12-8-2) exploded offensively, tying their season-high with seven goals, including a dominant second period in which they outscored the Sharks 4-0 to turn a competitive 3-2 game into a runaway victory.

The Panthers opened the scoring early, with Nate Schmidt finding the back of the net before San Jose’s Cody Ceci and Will Smith countered to keep the Sharks competitive in the first period. However, Florida’s Ekblad scored later in the period, reclaiming a 3-2 lead for the Panthers heading into the first intermission.

From there, Florida took full control. A.J. Greer sparked the scoring barrage early in the second period, chasing Sharks goaltender Alexandar Georgiev after allowing four goals. His replacement, Yaroslav Askarov, fared no better as Tkachuk, Jesper Boqvist, and Sam Reinhart all tallied goals within minutes, widening the Panthers’ lead to 7-2 by the end of the second frame.

Goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky anchored Florida’s defensive effort, stopping 22 shots. Meanwhile, the Sharks, who have now dropped six straight games and 10 of their last 11, continued to struggle mightily on both ends of the ice.

Florida showcased its firepower, marking their third game of the season with a four-goal period. The balanced attack featured contributions from multiple lines, emphasizing the team’s depth.

The return of Aaron Ekblad to the top defensive pairing paid immediate dividends. His early goal not only gave the Panthers a lead but also set the tone for the team’s dominance.

Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky pulled Georgiev three minutes into the second period, hoping a switch to Askarov would spark the team. Instead, Florida capitalized, scoring three more times in the frame to extinguish any hopes of a comeback.

San Jose has now allowed five or more goals in each of their last three games and leads the league in goals allowed this season.

Florida’s four-goal second period marked their third such outburst of the season. The Panthers scored on seven of their 31 shots, maintaining efficient scoring chances throughout the game. San Jose’s defensive issues were on full display, with the team allowing 22 goals over their last three games.

The Panthers will look to carry their momentum into Sunday night’s matchup against the Vegas Golden Knights, while the Sharks will try to regroup as they host the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday.

This was a statement win for the Panthers, who rebounded strongly from a lackluster offensive showing in their previous game. With Ekblad healthy and Tkachuk leading the charge, Florida looks poised to build on this dominant performance. Meanwhile, the Sharks face serious questions about their defensive play and goaltending as their slump deepens.
