Panthers Rally from 17 Points Down to Edge Dolphins 27-24 in Thrilling Week 5 Victory

The Carolina Panthers overcame a 17-point first-half deficit to stun the Miami Dolphins 27-24 on Sunday, delivering a statement win at home and equaling a franchise record for largest comeback.

Panthers head coach Dave Canales preached resilience to his team this past week following a brutal 29-point road loss to the New England Patriots, urging his players not to let mistakes spiral out of control. The message resonated.

Bryce Young, who overcame two early turnovers, threw the game-winning 4-yard touchdown pass to backup tight end Mitchell Evans with 1:59 remaining, giving Carolina the lead for good. Young finished 19-of-30 for 198 yards and two touchdowns, orchestrating a late-game drive that featured a key 17-yard connection to rookie Jimmy Horn on fourth-and-5. Horn, making his NFL debut after being inactive the first four weeks, helped keep the drive alive and set up Evans’ decisive score, his second in two games.

Rico Dowdle, making his first start in place of the injured Chuba Hubbard, powered the Panthers on the ground, rushing for 206 yards and a touchdown. Dowdle’s performance included explosive 53- and 43-yard runs, and despite cramping that forced him to leave the game multiple times in the second half, he helped Carolina outgain Miami 237 yards to 19 on the ground. The free-agent pickup from Dallas came within 5 yards of breaking the franchise single-game rushing record held by DeAngelo Williams.

Miami initially looked in control behind Tua Tagovailoa, who capitalized on Young’s early turnovers to build a 17-0 lead with touchdown passes to De’Von Achane, Darren Waller, and Jaylen Waddle. Tagovailoa finished 27-of-36 for 256 yards in the Dolphins’ first game since losing Tyreek Hill to a season-ending knee injury.

The momentum began shifting late in the second quarter when Young connected with struggling wide receiver Xavier Legette for a 7-yard touchdown. Legette, who had just 8 receiving yards on four catches this season and had missed the last two games with a hamstring injury, delivered on a perfectly placed throw, prompting Canales to say he was in tears as Legette returned to the sideline.

Carolina finally seized the lead midway through the fourth quarter on a 1-yard TD run by Dowdle, only for Tagovailoa to respond with a 46-yard touchdown pass to Waddle, putting Miami ahead 24-20 with 4:50 left. The Panthers answered with composure, culminating in Evans’ go-ahead score. Miami had a final chance to reclaim the lead, but Patrick Jones II sacked Tagovailoa on third-and-10, forcing a punt. On Carolina’s final drive, Jack Jones was flagged for pass interference on Hunter Renfrow, giving the Panthers a game-sealing first down.

Carolina (2-3) improved to 4-117 (including playoffs) when trailing by 17 or more and remained unbeaten at home, showcasing a blend of resilience and opportunistic play-calling. The Dolphins (1-4) will aim to bounce back when they host the Los Angeles Chargers next Sunday, while the Panthers welcome Dallas to Charlotte.
