Philadelphia Survives Late Season Collapse to Earn Fifth Straight Playoff Appearance

The Philadelphia Phillies are heading back to the postseason. Bryce Harper and Edmundo Sosa homered, while Zack Wheeler delivered a Game 7-caliber performance as the Phillies clinched the final National League wild-card berth with a 7-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday on the final day of the regular season.

Jhoan Duran struck out Nick Fortes to seal the win and send Philadelphia into the playoffs after a dramatic final week of the regular season. The Phillies will open a best-of-three Wild Card Series Tuesday in Atlanta.

The Rays, meanwhile, earned a postseason bye after winning the American League East and will begin their playoff run Saturday against the winner of the Boston Red Sox-New York Yankees series.

Wheeler Delivers When Phillies Needed Him Most

Wheeler took the mound with Philadelphia’s season hanging in the balance and responded with the performance his team needed. The right-hander struck out five and allowed one run over six innings to improve to 14-5. Interim manager Don Mattingly had described the game as a “Game 7” for the Phillies, and Wheeler pitched accordingly.

Philadelphia had been in position to clinch a playoff berth as early as Wednesday, but four consecutive losses put the Phillies’ postseason hopes in jeopardy. Their wild-card lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks had nearly disappeared after a late-season tailspin.

The Phillies entered September with a 6½-game lead over Arizona for the third NL wild card, but instead of cruising into October, they found themselves needing a victory on the final day of the season. This time, they left no doubt.

Phillies Jump on Rays Early

Bryson Stott helped settle the nerves immediately, delivering an RBI double in the first inning against Rays starter Nick Martinez. J.T. Realmuto then snapped an 0-for-34 skid with an RBI double in the second inning, giving Philadelphia another early run.

Kyle Schwarber followed with a two-run double and celebrated by belly-flopping into second base as the Phillies took a 4-0 lead. The four-run start brought the rainy crowd to life and gave Wheeler plenty of breathing room. Harper added to the advantage in the fifth inning with a solo home run before Sosa launched a two-run shot to make it 7-1. Philadelphia finished with 12 hits, producing the offensive performance necessary to complement Wheeler’s strong outing.

Harper, Sosa Provide the Power

Harper’s home run capped a remarkable regular season for the Phillies star, who also played all 162 games. Sosa’s two-run homer provided the final major offensive blow for Philadelphia as the Phillies turned a tense postseason race into a celebration. The Phillies had spent much of the season trying to maintain their position behind Atlanta in the NL East, but Sunday’s victory ensured that their season would continue beyond September.

Philadelphia finished 88-74, behind Atlanta in the division, but earned its fifth consecutive postseason appearance. That matches the longest playoff streak in franchise history, tying the club record established from 2007 through 2011, when the Phillies won five straight NL East titles.

Rays’ Jonny DeLuca Homers Twice

Tampa Bay’s offense came from Jonny DeLuca, who homered twice in the loss. The Rays finished the regular season 98-64 after going 77-85 a year ago, completing one of baseball’s biggest year-to-year turnarounds and earning the AL East title and a first-round postseason bye.

Junior Caminero also made history during Tampa Bay’s remarkable season. He became the fourth player since divisional play began in 1969 to start all 162 games at third base, joining Sal Bando in 1969, Cal Ripken Jr. in 1997 and Vinny Castilla in 1998. Harper also appeared in all 162 games for Philadelphia.

Luzardo Returns as Phillies Prepare for Atlanta

The Phillies also received encouraging news on the pitching front when Jesús Luzardo was activated from the injured list following a bout with left shoulder inflammation. Luzardo threw only four pitches in a scoreless eighth inning, making his first appearance since throwing the first shutout of his career Sept. 7 against Atlanta.

With the Wild Card Series beginning Tuesday, Philadelphia will now turn its attention toward Atlanta and a best-of-three matchup that will determine which team advances deeper into October. For the Phillies, Sunday’s victory erased the frustration of their late season collapse and replaced it with a postseason celebration.

They were on the brink of watching their wild card advantage disappear. Instead, Wheeler pitched like an ace, Harper and Sosa supplied the power, and Philadelphia finished the regular season with a playoff berth and another chance to make a run at the World Series.
