Surfer Arran Strong Presumed Dead

Professional surfer Arran Strong is presumed dead after disappearing while paddle boarding off the coast of Portugal, bringing a tragic end to a search that lasted several days and shocked the international surfing community.

The 28-year-old British surfer went missing Monday during a paddleboarding trip along Portugal’s Algarve coastline with his coach, José Maria Pyrrait. According to the BBC, the pair had stopped during their journey to rest, drink water and take photos before continuing down the coast. Pyrrait later said Strong accidentally left behind his safety leash, also known as a leg rope, after the break.

The two surfers separated as they resumed paddling, with Strong moving ahead while Pyrrait followed behind. When the coach eventually caught up, he found Strong’s paddleboard drifting alone in the water. Despite immediately searching the area and diving into the ocean several times, there was no sign of the surfer. Pyrrait then alerted emergency responders, who launched a large-scale search involving rescue boats, helicopters and other emergency personnel.

Portuguese authorities searched the coastline for several days, but difficult weather conditions, including fog and strong ocean currents, hampered the operation. After finding no evidence of Strong, officials suspended the search and said he is now presumed dead.

Strong was one of Great Britain’s top competitive surfers and had represented the country in multiple international events, including the ISA World Surfing Games. Although born in Spain, he competed under the British flag and spent much of his time training along Portugal’s renowned Atlantic coast.

News of Strong’s disappearance prompted an outpouring of grief from fellow surfers, coaches and fans around the world. Many remembered him as a talented athlete whose love of the ocean was matched by his generosity and positive attitude outside of competition.

Strong’s coach shared an emotional tribute following the search, describing the young surfer as someone who had become like family. National surfing organizations and members of the global surfing community have also expressed their condolences, honoring Strong’s dedication to the sport and the impact he made during his career.

While rescue crews have ended their active search, Strong’s disappearance serves as a sobering reminder of the risks even experienced water athletes face when safety equipment is not used. His loss has left a profound void in the surfing world, where he was respected not only for his competitive accomplishments but also for the friendships he built throughout his career.
