No. 2 seed Purdue continued its NCAA Tournament dominance on Sunday, defeating seventh-seeded Miami 79-69 in the second round of the West Region and advancing to the Sweet 16 for the third consecutive year. The victory marked Coach Matt Painter’s 500th career win at Purdue, just 12 shy of Gene Keady’s school record.
Purdue’s success was powered by the sharpshooting of Fletcher Loyer, who scored 24 points, including a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range, and Trey Kaufman-Renn, who added 19 points and nine rebounds. Loyer’s timely steals and fast-break plays, including a driving layup set up by a steal, helped Purdue create breathing room in the second half, eventually stretching the lead to 68-57 with 5:32 remaining.
The Boilermakers’ veteran point guard, Braden Smith, who was playing his first game since breaking Bobby Hurley’s NCAA career assists record, contributed 12 points and eight assists. Though Miami’s athletic guards frequently pressured him into turnovers — matching his career high with eight — Smith’s composure at the line down the stretch proved decisive. He converted four critical free throws in the final minute after Miami cut an 11-point deficit to 73-69.
Miami’s Shelton Henderson led the Hurricanes with 18 points and eight rebounds, often tasked with guarding the smaller Smith in a physical matchup. Malik Reneau chipped in 16 points but also had seven turnovers. Despite trailing for much of the game, the Hurricanes demonstrated resilience, reflecting their record-breaking improvement from a 7-24 season last year, a 19-win increase that matched the NCAA’s recognized record for largest year-over-year improvement.
The first half featured a tightly contested battle. Miami opened strong with an alley-oop dunk by Ernest Udeh Jr., but Loyer’s hot hand sparked a 13-2 Purdue run, giving the Boilermakers a 19-12 lead. Miami fought back to lead 40-38 at halftime following a two-handed jam by Richardson and a transition layup by Tre Donaldson, showing they could match Purdue’s intensity.
In the second half, Purdue’s depth and sharpshooting ultimately prevailed. Kaufman-Renn’s three-point play following Loyer’s driving layup capped an 11-3 run that helped Purdue reclaim control. Loyer and Smith’s perfect combined 14-for-14 free-throw shooting down the stretch ensured the Boilermakers held off Miami’s late rally.
Purdue (29-8) now advances to face 11th-seeded Texas in the West Region semifinals Thursday in San Jose. The two teams last met in the 2022 second round, when Purdue eliminated the Longhorns, setting the stage for a rematch with Sweet 16 stakes.
With sharp shooting, veteran leadership, and timely defense, Purdue once again demonstrated why it’s a staple in the NCAA Tournament’s latter stages, keeping the dream of a national title very much alive.
