Matthew Stafford delivered touchdown passes on the Los Angeles Rams’ first three possessions Sunday night, but even that wasn’t the moment that had the veteran quarterback raising his hand atop his head in celebration.
That came when cornerback Cobie Durant, who proudly calls himself the Land Shark, ripped the ball away from Tampa Bay tight end Cade Otton and raced 50 yards for a momentum-shifting pick-six. As Durant sprinted into the end zone, Stafford threw up a fin salute — and from there, the Rams never looked back.
Behind a 31-point first half, a dominant defensive showing, and an MVP-level performance from Stafford, the Rams rolled past the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 34–7 at SoFi Stadium, taking sole possession of first place in the NFC and thrilling the largest home crowd in stadium history.
By the time Stafford floated his third touchdown pass — a 24-yard strike to Davante Adams — chants of “M-V-P! M-V-P!” thundered through SoFi. The quarterback responded with one of his most commanding performances of the season, completing 25 of 35 passes for 273 yards and three touchdowns, while extending his interception-free streak to 308 consecutive attempts, the eighth streak of 300 or more in the NFL this century.
Stafford has now gone eight straight games without a pick. And with the Rams (9–2) surging to six consecutive wins since Oct. 2 — and not trailing in a game since the second quarter of Week 6 — the 36-year-old has planted himself squarely in the MVP conversation.
Adams was masterful again, hauling in two touchdowns and boosting his league-leading total to 12 scoring grabs, including nine touchdowns in his last five games. His 1-yard TD capped an efficient 80-yard opening march, and his 24-yard burst late in the first half effectively put the game out of reach.
Rookie star Puka Nacua added seven catches for 97 yards, while tight end Colby Parkinson snagged a 5-yard TD in the second quarter to make it 21–0.
New kicker Harrison Mevis remained perfect in his NFL debut, punching through both of his field-goal attempts.
Durant’s interception return — his second career defensive score — lit the fuse for a defensive performance reminiscent of the Rams’ most dominant days. On a night when the franchise honored retired legend Aaron Donald, the current unit did the former Defensive Player of the Year proud.
Los Angeles suffocated Tampa Bay, holding the Bucs to 123 yards through three quarters and just 193 yards overall. The pass rush was relentless, with Jared Verse and Kobie Turner recording two sacks each.
The back end feasted as well: Emmanuel Forbes intercepted a Baker Mayfield Hail Mary before halftime, setting up Tampa Bay’s unraveling.
It was a brutal night for the Buccaneers (6–5), who have now dropped three straight and four of their last five — giving up 106 total points during the skid.
Quarterback Baker Mayfield managed only 60 yards of offense before throwing two interceptions and injuring his left shoulder on a first-half touchdown pass to Tez Johnson. Though he stayed in until halftime, Mayfield appeared to aggravate the injury on the intercepted Hail Mary and was ruled out after the break.
Veteran Teddy Bridgewater entered for the second half, but Tampa Bay mustered only 70 net passing yards for the night.
Mayfield will undergo an MRI on Monday. The loss also allowed the Carolina Panthers — who play San Francisco on Monday — to pull even with the Bucs atop the NFC South.
With six games left, the Rams have jumped ahead of the defending NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles (8–3) for the conference’s top seed. The win capped back-to-back sellouts that marked the two largest crowds in SoFi Stadium history — a clear sign that Los Angeles has recognized this team’s rise.
McVay’s offense is sharp, the defense is ferocious, and Stafford is playing some of the cleanest football of his career.
For now, the Rams are exactly where they’ve played themselves into: on top of the NFC and on top of the football world.
Buccaneers: Host the Arizona Cardinals on Nov. 30. Rams: Travel to face the Carolina Panthers on Nov. 30.
