Rangers Beat Lightning 4-1 as Alexis Lafrenière Scores Twice on Frozen Frenzy Night

New York Extends Home Winning Streak to Five Games

The New York Rangers continued their strong start at home Tuesday night, defeating the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-1 on NHL Frozen Frenzy night behind two goals from Alexis Lafrenière and 25 saves from goaltender Dylan Garand. Will Cuylle and Mika Zibanejad also scored for New York, which earned its fifth consecutive home victory and snapped Tampa Bay’s four game winning streak.

The Lightning had not lost since their 5-1 defeat against the Rangers in New York’s home opener on Oct. 1. However, Lafrenière struck early to put the Rangers in control, and New York maintained its advantage throughout the night.

Lafrenière Strikes Twice in the First Period

Lafrenière wasted little time getting the Rangers on the scoreboard, beating Tampa Bay goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy from close range just 62 seconds into the game. The 25-year-old winger, the first overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft, struck again at 12:47 of the opening period to give New York a two goal advantage.

The second goal was Lafrenière’s team-leading seventh of the season. Ty Kartye assisted on both tallies, continuing an impressive stretch after scoring twice in New York’s previous game, a 6-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks.

Lafrenière has been particularly productive in recent games. After recording a hat trick in a 5-2 home victory over the New York Islanders on Oct. 6, he has scored in four consecutive games, establishing himself as a key offensive force for the Rangers. His career high is 28 goals, set during the 2023-24 season.

Tampa Bay managed to cut into the deficit late in the first period when Zemgus Girgensons scored his first goal of the season, making it 2-1 and giving the Lightning a chance to regain momentum.

Cuylle Adds Insurance as Garand Shuts Down Tampa Bay

The Rangers restored their two-goal cushion late in the second period. Cuylle redirected a point shot from Sean Durzi past Vasilevskiy for his third goal of the season, extending New York’s lead to 3-1.

With the Lightning searching for a comeback, Garand delivered when the Rangers needed him most. The 24-year-old goaltender stopped 25 shots, turning aside several important chances in the third period to preserve New York’s advantage.

Garand has stepped into the starting role following an injury to Igor Shesterkin, who was hurt last Friday against Washington and subsequently ruled out for the season. Garand earned his second consecutive victory, providing the Rangers with stability in goal during a difficult stretch.

His third-period performance drew loud support from the home crowd, which serenaded him with chants of “Dylan, Dylan” after several key saves. Vasilevskiy finished with 19 saves for Tampa Bay. Zibanejad sealed the victory with an empty-net goal at 17:16 of the third period, completing the 4-1 win and ensuring the Lightning would leave New York without extending their winning streak.

Rangers Make Early Season History at Home

The victory marked just the third time in franchise history that the Rangers have won five consecutive home games to begin a season. New York previously opened with six straight home victories in 1983-84 and established the franchise mark with eight consecutive home wins to start the 1990-91 campaign.

The Rangers will look to continue their momentum Thursday when they travel to face the New Jersey Devils. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay will attempt to rebound when it hosts the Seattle Kraken on Thursday. With Lafrenière producing consistently and Garand delivering strong performances in goal, New York has found two important contributors as it looks to build on its early season success.
