Regal Princess Cruise Crew Death
A crew member aboard Princess Cruises’ Regal Princess has died after going overboard during a Caribbean voyage that departed from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, marking a tragic incident that prompted an hours-long search at sea before the employee was found deceased.
The incident occurred early Monday, July 13, while the cruise ship was sailing in waters off the coast of Cancún, Mexico. According to Princess Cruises, the crew member went overboard during the overnight hours, leading the ship to immediately reverse course and begin emergency search procedures.
Massive Search and Rescue Operation Launched
After the alarm was raised, the Regal Princess suspended its voyage and coordinated an extensive search with Mexican maritime authorities. Another cruise ship, Carnival Jubilee, also joined the effort to help search the surrounding waters.
Passengers onboard described watching the vessel circle the area for several hours as rescue teams scanned the ocean. The search lasted more than eight hours before authorities recovered the crew member. Princess Cruises later confirmed the individual had died.
The cruise line has not publicly identified the crew member or released details about their role aboard the ship. Officials have also not disclosed what led to the person going overboard, and the circumstances remain under investigation.
Princess Cruises Offers Support
In a statement, Princess Cruises expressed its condolences to the crew member’s loved ones and said the loss has deeply affected the ship’s crew.
The company said it is providing emotional support and counseling services to employees and passengers impacted by the tragedy. Princess Cruises also thanked the responding agencies and the crew aboard Carnival Jubilee for assisting with the search operation.
The cruise line said it is fully cooperating with maritime authorities as they investigate what happened.
Voyage Temporarily Interrupted
The Regal Princess had departed Port Everglades on July 11 for a seven-day Western Caribbean itinerary with scheduled stops in Cozumel, Belize City, and Roatán.
The emergency search caused a significant delay as the ship remained in the area where the crew member went overboard. Once the search concluded, the vessel resumed its itinerary and later returned to Fort Lauderdale as scheduled.
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities have not announced whether the incident was accidental or involved any other factors, and no additional information has been released regarding the crew member’s death.
Overboard incidents involving cruise ship crew members are uncommon, and cruise lines have extensive emergency protocols that require ships to immediately halt their voyage and coordinate with nearby vessels and maritime rescue agencies whenever someone is reported missing at sea. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
