Remember Those Days When Jelly Roll Was Fat and Rapped About Cocaine?

Aaah, the good old days. I could remember when it was not that long ago (five-six years), and Jelly Roll was pleasantly plump and loved rapping about drugs. That’s the Jelly Roll that I discovered when I went down a YouTube rabbit hole watching videos of countless white rappers. Rappers that were specifically in genres called “hick hop” and “Trump Hop”.

Jelly Roll nice and fat…and not one tattoo on his face.

But the Jelly Roll of 2026 got skinny, he sings country music, and he even wrestles in the WWE. One could say that Jelly Roll’s a better person. That he’s evolved, and that he’s changed for the better. But I am selfish, and I want the old Jelly Roll back.

If you don’t know who Jelly Roll is, you probably should if you pay attention to pop culture at all. Jelly Roll, whose real name is Jason DeFord, is an American musician known for blending genres like hip-hop, country, and rock. Jelly Roll is originally from Nashville, Tennessee. He grew up in the city and his roots there have definitely influenced his music and style.

The name “Jelly Roll” has a backstory. It’s a nickname that he adopted from his younger days, and it’s believed to have roots in the slang for something sweet or indulgent. It also reflects his larger-than-life personality and the kind of fun, approachable vibe that he brings to his music.

Jelly Roll is married to Bunnie XO. They tied the knot in 2016. Jelly Roll has three children. A daughter named Bailee, a son named Noah, and another daughter named Devany.

Jelly gained popularity in the early 2000s with his rap career and then transitioned into country music more recently. He’s also known for his candid lyrics and personal storytelling.

Some of Jelly Roll’s biggest hit songs include tracks like “Save Me,” which really resonated with fans for its raw emotion, and “Dead Man Walking,” which also gained a lot of popularity. He’s also known for songs like “Creature” and “Need a Favor,” among others. His music often blends heartfelt lyrics with catchy melodies.
In this video, Jelly is rapping in what seems like a hotel room. Like an Econo Lodge, La Quinta type hotel room. Definitely, not a Waldorf Astoria. It is exactly the type of hotel room that a dope deal is made in. He’s got his buddies alongside him showing him love with every clever line that he delivers.
What is impressive about this particular video is that Jelly “freestyles” for 10 minutes. TEN WHOLE MINUTES!!! This is not easy to do at all. Especially for white people. But he actually does it. He keeps his breathe which is also hard to do (for a big fella), and he delivers quality rhymes off the top of his dome. He gives us so many different ways to describe how he flips the cocaine, cuts the cocaine, and even how he puts the cocaine on clearance when it starts sitting for too long.
Honestly speaking, I wrote this blog because I sincerely like Jelly Roll. I feel like I discovered him way before many others when I came across this freestyle video. I am happy for his success. I am happy that he has become a superstar. Personally, I never saw it coming. I can say from this video, there is no way anyone could have guessed that Jelly Roll would go from dope boy to country’s favorite toy.
