Reynolds’ Bases-Loaded Triple Sparks Pirates’ 10-3 Rout of Marlins for Fourth Straight Win

Bryan Reynolds delivered the decisive blow in a four-run third inning with a bases-loaded triple, and the Pittsburgh Pirates rolled to a 10-3 victory over the slumping Miami Marlins on Monday night at PNC Park. The win marked a season-high fourth straight for the Pirates, who continue to surge with timely hitting and aggressive play.

Facing Miami’s Eury Pérez in his long-awaited return to the majors, Reynolds broke open a 1-1 tie with a scorching line drive to right-center that cleared the bases. It gave Pittsburgh a 4-1 lead and all the momentum it needed to secure the win. Pérez, making his first start since September 20, 2023, after Tommy John surgery, struggled with command and was chased after just three innings, surrendering four runs on four hits, with five strikeouts and two walks.

Reynolds’ triple came after Andrew McCutchen notched an RBI infield single, continuing a 15-hit onslaught by the Pirates, with all nine starters recording at least one hit. McCutchen and Adam Frazier led the charge with three hits apiece, and Brett Sullivan contributed two RBIs in his Pirates debut after being called up from Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday.

“It’s always nice when you can get a contribution from everyone in the lineup,” Pirates manager Derek Shelton said. “Reynolds came through with a big swing, and we just kept adding on.”

The Pirates put the game out of reach in the sixth inning, capitalizing on sloppy defense by the Marlins. Ke’Bryan Hayes’ bunt single sparked a four-run frame that included two throwing errors, extending the lead to 8-2. The Pirates would tack on two more insurance runs late to close out the victory.

Miami’s lone bright spot was Otto Lopez, who opened the scoring with a leadoff home run — his sixth of the season — in the second inning. But the Marlins offense fizzled after that, managing just three runs on seven hits and committing three errors. It was their eighth loss in the past nine games.

Despite the defeat, the night carried some historical significance for Pérez, who, at 22 years and 55 days old, remains the youngest pitcher in the major leagues.

Pirates rookie starter Mike Burrows pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out six and walking three. Caleb Ferguson (2-0) followed with two perfect innings in relief to earn the win.

The start of the game was delayed 41 minutes due to the threat of inclement weather, but once it began, Pittsburgh showed no signs of slowing down.

Bryan Reynolds’ bases-loaded triple in the third inning gave Pittsburgh a lead it never relinquished. The Pirates are now 20-8 at home against NL East opponents since the start of last season.

With the win, Pittsburgh improved to 33-32 and remains firmly in the hunt in the NL Central, while Miami (22-43) continues to search for answers amid a frustrating stretch.
