San Francisco Starts Season With Two Dominant Wins

The San Francisco 49ers showed no signs of fatigue following their long trip to Australia, overwhelming the Miami Dolphins 35-13 on Sunday to open the season with two convincing victories. After beating the Los Angeles Rams 27-7 in the season opener in Australia, San Francisco returned home and delivered another dominant performance, becoming the first team in franchise history to begin a season with back-to-back victories of at least 20 points.

The 49ers scored touchdowns on their first five drives and controlled the game from start to finish. Miami, which had practiced in nearby Napa during the week in an effort to avoid additional travel, had few answers for San Francisco’s offense. Brock Purdy was nearly flawless, completing 20 of 22 passes for 287 yards and two touchdowns while adding a rushing touchdown. At one point, Purdy completed 18 consecutive passes as the 49ers repeatedly moved the ball against the Dolphins’ defense.

Purdy Leads Another Efficient Offensive Performance

Purdy’s precision passing helped San Francisco build its lead, particularly after halftime. He connected with George Kittle on a 12-yard touchdown pass and Kyle Juszczyk on a 6-yard scoring strike during the first two drives of the third quarter, turning a competitive first half into a comfortable San Francisco advantage.

The 49ers also received another milestone performance from Christian McCaffrey. McCaffrey scored twice on 1-yard touchdown runs, giving him 100 career touchdowns in just 114 games. Only LaDainian Tomlinson, who reached 100 touchdowns in 89 games, Emmitt Smith in 93 games and Shaun Alexander in 96 games reached the milestone faster during the Super Bowl era.

McCaffrey now has 50 touchdowns with both the Carolina Panthers and 49ers, joining Marshall Faulk and Randy Moss as the only players to score at least 50 touchdowns with two different franchises.

Dolphins Struggle to Finish Drives

Miami’s offense moved the ball at times but struggled to turn those opportunities into touchdowns. Malik Willis completed 14 of 23 passes for 197 yards, but he was sacked four times and could not lead the Dolphins into the end zone until late in the fourth quarter. Riley Patterson missed a 51-yard field-goal attempt on Miami’s opening possession, while the Dolphins settled for field goals on two other first-half trips into the red zone.

San Francisco, meanwhile, consistently finished its drives with touchdowns. McCaffrey scored on a 1-yard run before Purdy added a 2-yard rushing touchdown, giving the 49ers a 14-6 halftime advantage despite both defenses struggling to consistently get off the field. The Dolphins finally found the end zone with 2:30 remaining when Willis connected with Ryan Miller on a 77-yard touchdown pass, but the big play came far too late to change the outcome.

49ers Continue Fast Start

San Francisco’s performance marked another impressive showing for a team that has opened the season with two decisive victories. The 49ers combined an efficient passing attack from Purdy with McCaffrey’s production on the ground and a defense that consistently pressured Willis.

The result was another comfortable victory and a 2-0 start. For Miami, the loss drops the Dolphins to 0-2 and highlights the challenges facing a team that entered the season carrying more than $180 million in dead salary-cap money.

The Dolphins return home next Sunday when they host the Kansas City Chiefs as they look to get their first victory of the season. The 49ers will look to remain unbeaten when they return home Sunday to face the Arizona Cardinals.
