Inter Miami CF vs. CF Montréal @ Nu Stadium in Miami
Inter Miami CF returns to South Florida when Lionel Messi and the Herons host CF Montréal. Kickoff is scheduled for 730pm, giving Miami fans another chance to watch Messi and Inter Miami under the lights.
The matchup comes at a particularly interesting time for Inter Miami. After a busy stretch that included Leagues Cup action and MLS road games, Miami is looking to regain its footing in the regular season. The Herons are coming off a frustrating 2-1 home loss to Toronto FC on August 22, a result that extended their winless run to five matches. Messi scored Miami’s lone goal in that game, but Toronto held on for the victory.
That makes the Montréal match more than just another night at the new stadium. Inter Miami needs a response, and having Messi on the field certainly gives the club an enormous advantage. The Argentine superstar has continued to produce offensively, scoring against Toronto and reaching 14 MLS goals for the season.
CF Montréal arrives with a fascinating new storyline of its own. The Canadian club recently added veteran Chilean superstar Alexis Sánchez, who joined Montréal after an 18-year European career that included stops with Barcelona, Arsenal, Manchester United, Inter Milan and Marseille. At 37, Sánchez has made it clear he still wants to compete, and his arrival adds another internationally recognizable name to an MLS matchup already featuring Messi.
For Inter Miami, however, the objective is pretty simple: win the damn soccer game. Miami has too much talent to spend the end of August piling up draws and losses, particularly with the MLS postseason getting closer. Messi, Rodrigo De Paul and the rest of the Miami attack will be expected to create plenty of chances against a Montréal side that will have to deal with the considerable problem of stopping one of the greatest players in soccer history.
