PRESEASON HOCKEY: Florida Panthers vs. Tampa Bay Lightning @ Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise
South Florida hockey fans get one more taste of the Panthers-Lightning rivalry before the games start counting for real. The Florida Panthers will welcome the Tampa Bay Lightning to Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise on Saturday, September 26th, at 6 p.m. for the final preseason game for both teams.
While it’s technically an exhibition game, try telling that to two Florida teams that have developed a pretty serious dislike for each other. The Panthers are using the matchup as their final tune-up before opening the regular season against the Carolina Hurricanes on September 29th, while Tampa Bay is also putting the finishing touches on its roster.
There will be plenty of attention on the Panthers as captain Aleksander Barkov continues his return after missing the entire 2025-26 season with a knee injury. Tampa Bay brings plenty of firepower of its own, including Nikita Kucherov, Victor Hedman, Andrei Vasilevskiy and Brayden Point.
For fans, it’s one last excuse to head to Sunrise, watch some NHL hockey and pretend the traffic on I-595 isn’t going to ruin the evening. The preseason may not count in the standings, but when the Panthers and Lightning meet, nobody seems particularly interested in treating it like practice.

University of Miami Hurricanes vs. Central Michigan Chippewas @ Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens
The No. 5 Miami Hurricanes return to Hard Rock Stadium Saturday night looking to stay unbeaten when they host the Central Michigan Chippewas. Miami enters the matchup at 3-0 after opening the season with wins over Stanford, Florida A&M and Wake Forest, while Central Michigan comes in at 2-1 after rebounding from a season-opening loss to New Mexico with consecutive victories over Colgate and Wyoming.
Miami has been one of the nation’s most explosive teams through the opening three games, averaging 51.7 points and 594.3 yards per game. The Hurricanes have also been strong defensively, allowing just 11 points per game. Quarterback Darian Mensah has helped drive the offense, while Miami’s defense has been particularly effective against the run, allowing just 45.7 rushing yards per game entering the matchup.
Central Michigan brings a much different challenge. The Chippewas are coming off a 24-10 victory over Wyoming in which quarterback Angel Flores led a dominant rushing attack, carrying the ball 28 times for 163 yards and two touchdowns. Central Michigan finished that game with 339 rushing yards while attempting only seven passes, making its ground game an obvious area for Miami to monitor.
The Hurricanes will also have some personnel issues to deal with after the Wake Forest game. Running back Marty Brown and wide receiver Joshua Moore have been ruled out for the remainder of the season because of injuries. Miami is also monitoring injuries to running back Mark Fletcher Jr., wide receiver Malachi Toney, defensive lineman Ahmad Moten Sr. and linebacker Ezekiel Marcelin Jr.
Miami and Central Michigan have met only once previously, with the Hurricanes winning 17-12 in 2019. Saturday’s meeting represents Central Michigan’s final non-conference game of the season and Miami’s final game before a major ACC road test at Clemson on October 3.
For the Hurricanes, the assignment is fairly straightforward: take care of business at home, avoid further injuries and head into the Clemson game with momentum. Central Michigan, meanwhile, gets the opportunity to walk into Hard Rock Stadium and spoil what Miami hopes will be another comfortable Saturday night in South Florida.

Miami Dolphins vs. Kansas City Chiefs @ Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens
The Kansas City Chiefs head to South Florida Sunday to face the Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium in a Week 3 matchup that already has plenty of storylines. Kansas City enters the game 2-0, while Miami is 0-2 after a 35-13 loss to the San Francisco 49ers last Sunday.
Kansas City has looked dangerous early in the season, particularly behind quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs survived a wild 33-30 overtime game against Indianapolis in Week 2, with Mahomes throwing for 382 yards and three touchdowns. Travis Kelce added nine catches for 101 yards and a touchdown, while running back Kenneth Walker III contributed 117 rushing yards and 61 receiving yards. Harrison Butker ultimately ended the game with a 40-yard field goal in overtime.
Miami, meanwhile, is trying to put the brakes on a rough opening to the season. The Dolphins have dropped their first two games and are beginning the 2026 season under new head coach Jeff Hafley. Quarterback Malik Willis and running back De’Von Achane will be among the players Miami needs to generate offense against a Kansas City defense that has already helped the Chiefs get off to a 2-0 start.
There is also some history between these teams. Kansas City leads the all-time series 17-16, including playoff meetings, but Miami has won seven of its last 10 home games against the Chiefs. The most recent meeting in Miami ended with Kansas City winning 33-27 in December 2020, while the Chiefs also defeated the Dolphins 26-7 in the 2024 AFC Wild Card game.
For Miami, this is the kind of early-season game that can quickly become a measuring stick. The Dolphins are already staring at an 0-2 record, while Kansas City arrives undefeated and coming off an overtime thriller. And because apparently the NFL enjoys making every Sunday unnecessarily stressful, Miami gets Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs while still trying to figure out exactly what this new-look Dolphins team is going to be.
