Sharks Rally Past Panthers 4-3 in Overtime to Open Season

San Jose Sharks 4, Florida Panthers 3 In Overtime

The San Jose Sharks opened the season with a dramatic 4-3 overtime victory over the Florida Panthers on Thursday night, overcoming a late Florida comeback before Luca Cagnoni delivered the game-winning goal. Cagnoni rocketed a shot that deflected off Panthers goaltender Akira Schmid at 3:14 of overtime, giving San Jose the season-opening victory after Florida erased a three-goal deficit in the third period.

The Sharks appeared to be in control after building a 3-0 lead, but the Panthers stormed back behind Eetu Luostarinen and Matthew Tkachuk. Luostarinen scored twice, while Tkachuk tied the game at 5:18 of the third period to force overtime.

Sharks Build Three Goal Lead

Mason Marchment opened the scoring for San Jose with 5:40 remaining in the first period, giving the Sharks an early advantage. Will Smith then took over in the second period, scoring twice to extend San Jose’s lead. His first goal came shorthanded, while his second came on the power play, with Macklin Celebrini assisting on both goals.

Smith and Celebrini each finished with three-point performances as the Sharks’ young core helped San Jose establish a 3-0 advantage. San Jose goaltender Yaroslav Askarov made 23 saves to preserve the lead for much of the night, while Schmid stopped 28 shots for Florida.

Panthers Complete Comeback

Florida refused to go quietly, mounting a furious comeback in the third period. Luostarinen scored twice during the rally, and Tkachuk pulled the Panthers even at 5:18 of the third. Luostarinen and Tkachuk scored just 17 seconds apart, turning what had been a three-goal Sharks lead into a 3-3 game. The comeback sent the game to overtime, where Cagnoni ended it early with his shot at 3:14.

Physical Game Overshadowed by Barkov Injury Concern

The game featured several scuffles, including a confrontation between Tkachuk and Sharks defenseman Jacob Trouba in the center of the rink. The biggest concern for Florida came in the second period when captain Aleksander Barkov left the game after his left knee appeared to buckle during a scrum with San Jose defenseman Darnell Nurse and forward Zack Ostapchuk along the boards.

Barkov immediately left the ice and threw his glove onto the ground as he headed into the tunnel. The injury is particularly notable because Barkov missed all of last season after tearing his ACL and MCL during training camp. The 31-year-old Finnish center was playing his second game of the season.

Next Game For Both Teams

The Panthers will look to regroup Sunday night when they visit the Anaheim Ducks. The Sharks return home Saturday to host the Los Angeles Kings as they look to build on their overtime victory and begin the season with consecutive wins.
