Matthew Tkachuk’s long-awaited return to the lineup came with plenty of emotion and edge, but it was the San Jose Sharks who stole the spotlight — and the win — in a 4-1 victory over the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers on Monday night.
The Sharks spoiled Tkachuk’s season debut and backed it up with goals, toughness and timely goaltending in a game that escalated from chippy to downright chaotic. Rookie Will Smith continued his strong comeback from injury, scoring in his second consecutive game after missing a month, as San Jose controlled the tempo against a Florida team still finding its rhythm.
The night’s defining moment came midway through the third period when Panthers goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky charged out of his crease and skated the length of the ice to confront Sharks netminder Alex Nedeljkovic. Nedeljkovic had joined a scrum in the corner, and Bobrovsky answered by dropping the gloves in a rare goalie-on-goalie fight that sent the crowd into a frenzy. Fans roared “Bobby! Bobby!” in support of the veteran, who has backstopped Florida to back-to-back Stanley Cup titles.
The physicality only ramped up from there. The second meeting between the teams this season — and the first since Nov. 8 — featured constant pushing and shoving after whistles, with punches thrown and tempers flaring throughout the final period.
Between the whistles, however, San Jose was simply sharper. Defensemen Vincent Desharnais and Mario Ferraro both found the back of the net, and Nedeljkovic was stellar, stopping 36 shots to anchor the win. Barclay Goodrow put the game away with an empty-net goal in the closing minutes.
San Jose’s opportunistic attack took advantage of several loose rebounds from Bobrovsky, who finished with 24 saves on 27 shots. Florida’s lone goal came from Eetu Luostarinen, but the Panthers never found sustained momentum despite Tkachuk’s return.
Tkachuk logged just under 21 minutes of ice time and fired three shots on goal in his first game since helping Florida repeat as champions and hoisting the Stanley Cup in June. The 28-year-old winger missed the start of the season after undergoing surgery last summer to repair a sports hernia and torn adductor muscle. He was recently named to the U.S. Olympic roster for next month’s Games in Milan.
The win came just hours after Sharks general manager Mike Grier signaled that San Jose is ready to push forward following a lengthy rebuild, acquiring winger Kiefer Sherwood from Vancouver earlier in the day. Monday’s performance backed up that message.
Puck drop was moved up an hour to a 6 p.m. EST start due to the Miami Hurricanes playing in the nearby College Football Playoff national championship game.
The Sharks wrap up their road trip Tuesday night at Tampa Bay. The Panthers will look to regroup when they open a three-game trip Thursday night in Winnipeg.
