A Routine Outing Turns Dangerous
What began as a routine family outing on the water quickly turned into a life threatening emergency off the coast of Western Australia. Thirteen year old Austin Appelbee was paddleboarding with his mother and two younger siblings in Geographe Bay near Quindalup when strong winds and rough conditions pushed them farther from shore. The family had rented paddleboards and a small inflatable kayak, but shifting weather and offshore winds made it impossible for them to paddle back.
Family Swept Far Offshore
As conditions worsened, the inflatable kayak began taking on water and the family realized they were drifting rapidly out to sea. Austin’s mother, Joanne Appelbee, remained with his 12 year old brother and 8 year old sister, both wearing life jackets, as they clung to a paddleboard. With no nearby boats and daylight fading, the situation became increasingly dire as they were carried several miles offshore.
A Mother’s Impossible Decision
Faced with few options, Joanne made the decision to ask her eldest son to try to reach shore and get help. It was a choice driven by desperation and hope that at least one of them could raise the alarm. Austin initially tried using the damaged kayak but abandoned it when it slowed him down. He removed his life jacket and began swimming toward land against strong winds and choppy seas.
A Four Hour Swim Against the Ocean
Austin swam for approximately four hours, covering an estimated 2.5 miles in open water. Battling exhaustion and rough conditions, he focused on staying calm and moving forward. By the time he reached shore in the early evening, he was severely fatigued and collapsed on the sand. Despite his condition, he managed to get up and run roughly two kilometers to where his family’s belongings were located so he could find a phone.
Emergency Response and Rescue
After contacting emergency services, authorities launched a large scale search and rescue operation. A helicopter eventually located Austin’s mother and siblings around 8:30 p.m., approximately 14 kilometers offshore. They were found cold and exhausted but alive, still wearing life jackets and holding onto the paddleboard. All three were rescued and brought safely back to shore.
Praise for Extraordinary Bravery
Emergency officials credited Austin’s actions with saving his family’s lives, noting that without his decision to swim for help, the outcome could have been far worse. Police and rescue crews described the teenager’s endurance and determination as exceptional. Following medical checks, the family was reunited, and his mother publicly expressed immense pride in her son’s courage and resilience.
