Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby Enters Gambling Addiction Program, Leaving Red Raiders’ Future Uncertain

The Texas Tech Red Raiders football are facing a major offseason shake-up after quarterback Brendan Sorsby announced he will enter a residential treatment program for a gambling addiction, the school confirmed Monday.

Sorsby, one of the most high-profile additions from the transfer portal this offseason, was expected to play a central role in Texas Tech’s push to remain among the Big 12 Conference elite. Instead, his immediate future and potentially his eligibility has been thrown into serious doubt.

According to Texas Tech, the situation came to light after the discovery of thousands of online bets placed by Sorsby through a gambling app. The university moved quickly, announcing that Sorsby would step away from football activities and voluntarily enter treatment.

While the school has not disclosed specifics about the wagers, the volume and nature of the activity were enough to trigger concern at both the institutional and national level.

The NCAA has opened an investigation into Sorsby’s gambling activity, and the stakes are significant.

Under NCAA rules, student-athletes are strictly prohibited from betting on sports—both collegiate and professional. In response to the rapid expansion of legalized sports betting across the United States, the NCAA updated its policies in 2023 to clarify penalties and enforcement.

Those penalties can vary widely:

  • Permanent loss of eligibility for betting on one’s own team or school
  • Multi-game suspensions for betting on other sports
  • Mandatory counseling and reduced penalties for lesser violations

A key precedent is Hunter Dekkers, a former Iowa State Cyclones football quarterback who was ruled permanently ineligible in 2023 after placing wagers involving his own program.

If Sorsby is found to have bet on Texas Tech games—or even other Red Raiders teams—he could face a similar outcome.

Sorsby’s case may be further complicated by timing and geography. Before transferring, he spent time in states like Indiana and Ohio, both of which have legal sports betting markets—but with a minimum age of 21.

Sorsby did not turn 21 until January 2025, meaning any wagers placed before that date could also constitute underage gambling violations, adding another layer to the NCAA’s review.

Ironically, his current home state of Texas does not have legalized sports betting. However, daily fantasy sports platforms and prediction markets still provide legal gray-area avenues for wagering, which have increasingly come under scrutiny in collegiate cases.

The timing couldn’t be worse for Texas Tech. Fresh off a breakthrough season that included a Big 12 title and a College Football Playoff appearance led by quarterback Behren Morton, the Red Raiders were reloading—not rebuilding.

Sorsby was expected to either compete for or secure the starting job, bringing experience and upside to an already loaded roster. Now, the quarterback room is in flux:

  • If Sorsby is ruled ineligible, Texas Tech may need to rely on returning options or revisit the transfer portal late
  • If he faces a suspension, his availability for the 2026 season becomes uncertain
  • If reinstated after treatment, reintegration into the program will be closely monitored

Beyond the X’s and O’s, the situation also tests the program’s culture and leadership as it navigates a high-profile off-field issue.

Sorsby’s immediate focus will be on recovery, with his football future taking a backseat. The NCAA investigation is expected to take weeks, if not months, and will ultimately determine his eligibility status.

For Texas Tech, the priority is balancing competitive ambitions with player welfare—a challenge becoming increasingly common in the modern era of college athletics.

This case underscores a broader reality: as legalized and quasi-legal sports betting expands, the line between accessibility and risk continues to blur—especially for young athletes operating under strict NCAA rules.

For now, both Sorsby and Texas Tech are left in limbo, waiting for answers that could shape the trajectory of the Red Raiders’ 2026 season.
