In a game that perfectly encapsulated the spirit of baseball, the Detroit Tigers emerged victorious over the New York Yankees in a thrilling 3-2 win during the 2024 MLB Little League Classic. The game, played in front of a lively crowd of hundreds of Little Leaguers, concluded in dramatic fashion as Parker Meadows set off fireworks with a 10th-inning walk-off single that secured the win for Detroit.

The evening began as a pitchers’ duel, with both teams struggling to score early. The Yankees broke the deadlock in the sixth inning when Gleyber Torres crossed the plate on a wild pitch by Tigers ace Tarik Skubal, giving New York a 1-0 lead. The score remained tight, with the Tigers unable to break through until the ninth inning.

In the ninth, Detroit’s rookie sensation Jace Jung delivered a clutch performance that sent the game into extra innings. With two outs, Jung ripped a game-tying RBI single off Yankees closer Clay Holmes, who had been nearly untouchable throughout the season. The hit brought home Colt Keith, who had sparked the rally with a one-out double. Holmes’ blown save marked his 10th of the season, a frustrating outcome for the All-Star closer.

The tension only heightened in the 10th inning. The Yankees regained the lead when DJ LeMahieu’s single brought home their automatic runner, making it 2-1. But the Tigers were not done yet. Zach McKinstry responded in kind, tying the game at 2-all with a single that scored Detroit’s automatic runner.

With the game hanging in the balance, McKinstry then stole second base, setting the stage for Parker Meadows’ heroics. Meadows, facing Mark Leiter Jr. on the mound, delivered a sharp base hit to left field. Yankees prospect Jasson Domínguez hesitated for a split second before making his throw to the plate, but it was too late. McKinstry, charging home with full momentum, slid headfirst across the plate, sealing the Tigers’ victory and sending the Little Leaguers in attendance into a frenzy.

Beau Brieske, who pitched the 10th inning for Detroit, earned the win, improving his record to 2-3 on the season. Meanwhile, Mark Leiter Jr. took the loss, dropping to 3-5.

The 2024 MLB Little League Classic was not just a win for the Tigers but a celebration of the game itself, a reminder of the joy and excitement that baseball can bring to young and old fans alike.
